Appearance
Dalia is a compact hill dwarf with copper-brown skin, bright hazel eyes, and thick auburn hair braided with tiny brass bells. Her beard is absent, but she wears a carefully groomed mustache-like upper-lip braid as a theatrical affectation, along with colorful scarves, polished leather armor, and a long crimson coat covered in stitched symbols from old performances. Her hands are calloused from instruments, lockpicks, and years of hauling stage equipment.
Mannerisms
Dalia punctuates important statements by tapping a brass bell against her palm. She hums under her breath while thinking, bows theatrically after successful deceptions, and refers to nearly every dangerous plan as a performance with an improvisational ending.
Personality
Dalia is vivacious, irreverent, and intensely curious. She treats strangers as potential audiences, enemies as critics, and every crisis as an opportunity for a memorable anecdote. Beneath her theatrical confidence is a perceptive and surprisingly compassionate woman who notices loneliness quickly and dislikes seeing anyone excluded from the story.
Ideals
Freedom. No song, story, tradition, or authority should own a person's future. Everyone deserves the chance to choose their own part in the world.
Bonds
She carries her father's first brass stage bell and will risk almost anything to recover the ancestral songbook stolen from her family generations ago.
Flaws
Dalia cannot resist making a clever remark, even when silence would be safer. She exaggerates her accomplishments so often that she sometimes forgets where the truth ends. She also has a deep fear of being forgotten, which makes her chase applause long after a situation has become genuinely dangerous.
Quirks
Background
Dalia Starks was born beneath the stone terraces of a hill dwarf settlement, where most children were expected to learn a trade before they could grow a proper beard. Dalia instead learned the songs of miners, the comic timing of tavern poets, and the dramatic pauses used by traveling performers to make an audience lean forward. Her family considered music a pleasant hobby, but Dalia recognized something more powerful in it. A well-timed melody could turn anger into laughter, make a stranger feel like kin, or convince a roomful of armed patrons that a bar fight was a terrible idea. She left home with a battered lute, a borrowed disguise kit, and a talent for making every story sound slightly more dangerous than it really was. Dalia performed with circuses, adventuring troupes, and questionable theatrical companies, learning that applause was often only a few clever lies away. Her fortunes changed when she exposed a noble patron who had secretly sabotaged a rival performer, earning both a reputation for boldness and several enemies who disliked being embarrassed in public. Now she travels as a bard of the College of Lore, collecting secrets, songs, and scandalous stories. She adventures because danger provides better material than any stage, and because she suspects that somewhere in the world is a lost dwarf ballad whose final verse could reveal the truth about her family's forgotten past.
“Her family considered music a pleasant hobby, but Dalia recognized something more powerful in it.”
