Appearance
Alice is a slender high elf with warm bronze skin, bright green eyes, and long silver-blond hair usually tied into two uneven ribbons. She dresses in a brightly patched crimson-and-teal performer’s coat over practical traveling clothes, with bells sewn into one cuff and tiny painted stars along her boots. Her hands are quick and expressive, with callused fingertips from years of strings, drumheads, juggling props, and costume repairs. She takes up more space than her slight frame suggests, leaning across tables, throwing her arms wide during stories, and occasionally standing on chairs when a punchline deserves elevation.
Mannerisms
Alice punctuates important statements with tiny theatrical bows and often speaks as though an invisible audience is waiting for her next line. When thinking, she taps rhythms on nearby surfaces. When someone makes a pompous declaration, she silently rates it with her fingers from one to five.
Personality
Alice is exuberant, quick-witted, affectionate, and almost aggressively unembarrassable. She treats strangers as potential friends, enemies as potential audiences, and awkward silences as personal challenges. Beneath the constant joking is a sharp observer who notices when people are frightened, lonely, or being pushed aside. She would rather make someone laugh than impress them, although she secretly wants the high elven society that rejected her to hear her name praised.
Ideals
Freedom. Nobody should be forced to live according to someone else’s idea of dignity, especially when that idea is boring. Laughter is a small rebellion against fear, cruelty, and self-importance.
Bonds
The old traveling troupe is the closest thing Alice has to a family, and she will risk herself to protect its members. She also keeps Corvin’s battered first songbook, not because she misses him, but because several of his best jokes are still in it.
Flaws
Alice cannot resist turning a serious moment into a joke, even when silence would be wiser. She gets restless when life becomes predictable, abandons projects once they stop entertaining her, and is far too willing to assume that anyone who dislikes her humor simply needs more exposure.
Quirks
Background
Alice was born among high elves who prized elegance, restraint, and the ability to endure an entire formal dinner without making a single interesting noise. She failed spectacularly at all three. Alice turned solemn family recitals into audience participation, replaced ceremonial poetry with improvised limericks, and once taught a courtly peacock to bow on command. Her relatives called her embarrassing. Alice called them an audience that needed better material. Eventually, she left the high elven enclave with a traveling entertainment troupe, delighted to discover that laughter was considered a useful skill rather than a social defect. Within the troupe, Alice fell in love with Corvin Bellweather, a charming bard who taught her the craft of comedy, timing, musical accompaniment, and the delicate art of insulting someone while making them grateful for the compliment. For a while, they were inseparable, performing as a double act called The Silver Joke. Then Alice grew bored, first with their predictable routines, then with Corvin’s habit of explaining jokes after telling them, and finally with the relationship itself. She left with a cheerful goodbye, a stolen idea for a pratfall, and a promise to send back the good hat. Now she travels alone, determined to become a legendary comic bard whose songs make tyrants furious, monsters hesitate, and ordinary people laugh hard enough to forget their troubles for a little while.
“Alice called them an audience that needed better material.”
