Appearance
Khatira is a broad-shouldered earth genasi woman with warm ochre skin, dark copper hair cropped close at the sides, and heavy black curls gathered at the crown. Fine lines like pale mineral veins trace her forearms and collarbones, visible beneath the skin when she exerts herself. Her eyes are deep brown with flecks of dull gold, and her expression is usually watchful rather than stern. She smells faintly of sun-warmed stone, crushed thyme, and iron dust, a scent she insists is merely dust from the road. She walks with a grounded, slightly rolling gait, favoring her left foot on uneven ground, and becomes unnervingly still when listening.
Mannerisms
Khatira presses her thumb against her fingertips while counting or thinking, as though testing the grain of invisible stone. Before answering a difficult question, she tilts her head and becomes perfectly motionless. When angry, she speaks more quietly instead of raising her voice.
Personality
Khatira is observant, blunt, and intensely curious. She treats every ruin, weapon, and rumor as evidence of a larger pattern. In conversation she asks precise questions, remembers small details, and dislikes ornamental speech. Beneath her abrasive practicality is a patient, protective nature. She will complain about rescuing someone while already carrying that person's pack.
Ideals
Truth belongs to everyone, not merely to the powerful. If knowledge is dangerous, that is a reason to study it carefully, not bury it forever.
Bonds
She carries a chipped fragment of the shrine relic and will risk almost anything to learn what it was meant to do. She is fiercely loyal to displaced scholars, caravan workers, and anyone whose labor is ignored by people who profit from it.
Flaws
She cannot leave a mystery alone, even when pursuing it is tactically foolish. She is also contemptuous of people who claim certainty without evidence, and her corrections can become needlessly cruel.
Quirks
Background
Khatira was born in a quarry settlement where the stone remembered every hammer blow. Her mother shaped building blocks, her father kept ledgers for a caravan guild, and Khatira grew up among masons, traders, and fragments of old inscriptions. When a collapsed shrine revealed tablets written in Primordial, the settlement's visiting scholar took Khatira on as an assistant. She learned to read ancient scripts, compare contradictory accounts, and sleep beside excavation pits with one hand on a shovel. The work also taught her that knowledge is often buried beneath someone else's fear, greed, or deliberate lie. Years later, a dispute over a newly uncovered relic turned violent. Khatira's mentor wanted it studied, while local officials wanted it sold and a mercenary band wanted it destroyed. Khatira escaped with only her notes and a broken shard of the relic, but not before watching people die over words they could not even read. Since then, she has traveled as a wandering sage and reluctant protector, using the strength of her earth-born body to keep scholars alive long enough to finish their work. Her temper is not a mindless fury. It is the sudden pressure of buried stone breaking through a foundation, especially when someone burns a book, betrays a companion, or treats the past as disposable.
