Appearance
A lean, weather-hardened human man with wind-burned skin, close-cropped dark blond hair, and a narrow scar cutting through his left eyebrow. His gray-green eyes are bright with restless amusement. He wears a salt-stained leather coat over a dark shirt, soft boots suited for ship decks, and a red cord tied around his wrist. His movements are quick, balanced, and economical, like a sailor who has learned to keep his footing in a storm.
Mannerisms
Tav rolls a coin across his knuckles while listening, checks the nearest exit whenever he enters a room, and leans slightly into the wind even indoors. When he is nervous, he knots and unknots the red cord around his wrist.
Personality
Tav is quick-witted, sociable, and difficult to intimidate. He treats danger like a wager and conversation like a fencing match, constantly testing people for weaknesses and hidden motives. Beneath the swagger is a disciplined survivor who notices every change in tone, posture, and circumstance.
Ideals
Freedom. No captain, crown, church, or law has the right to own another person's course. A life worth living is one steered for oneself.
Bonds
He carries the red wrist cord once worn by the youngest sailor lost in the wreck, and he will risk almost anything to learn the boy's fate. He is also determined to recover the lost ship's log, believing it contains the names of everyone who profited from the disaster.
Flaws
He assumes every offer has a hidden price, and his suspicion often becomes self-fulfilling. He cannot resist embarrassing an arrogant person, even when silence would be safer. When cornered, he lies first and thinks afterward.
Quirks
Background
Tav Korp was born in a crowded harbor district to a family of dockworkers and rope-makers. As a boy, he learned the sea by climbing rigging, carrying messages between ships, and slipping through cargo holds whenever a shipmaster forgot to lock a hatch. His quick hands earned him work as a deck runner, but his sharper tongue earned him enemies among smugglers who disliked being outsmarted by a common sailor. When a merchant vessel vanished during a winter crossing, Tav was blamed for the missing cargo, despite knowing the ship had been betrayed from within. He survived the wreck by clinging to a broken mast and washed ashore with a stolen signet ring belonging to the ship's true traitor. Rather than return to the harbor authorities, Tav used the ring to infiltrate the traitor's circle, exposing a network of corrupt captains and customs officials. The victory won him a dangerous reputation, a few loyal friends, and a permanent distrust of respectable men who speak too smoothly. Now he travels from port to port as a freelance blade, scout, and occasional confidence man, chasing rumors of the lost vessel and the people who arranged its destruction. He claims he wants the truth, though he is not always sure what he intends to do with it once he finds it.
