Appearance
A lean, weathered human man with sun-browned skin, close-cropped dark hair, and a narrow scar running from his left eyebrow to his cheek. His gray-green eyes are constantly scanning for movement. He wears battered scale mail beneath a moss-colored cloak, carries a longbow and quiver, and keeps a spear within easy reach. His equipment is practical, repaired many times, and marked with small notches recording old campaigns and hunts.
Mannerisms
Cael habitually checks exits, counts arrows by touch, and turns his head slightly before answering a question, as if listening for a second voice beneath the first.
Personality
Cael is dryly observant, fiercely self-reliant, and more compassionate than he admits. He distrusts grand speeches but respects people who keep small promises. Around strangers he appears guarded and sardonic, while around frightened civilians he becomes patient, practical, and unexpectedly gentle.
Ideals
Freedom. No oath, crown, temple, or commander owns another person's conscience. A life saved by choice is worth more than a victory won by obedience.
Bonds
The frontier settlement he saved still shelters his younger sister and several former comrades. He sends them coin whenever he can, and he will risk almost anything to keep the old regiment from finding them.
Flaws
Cael assumes every authority figure is concealing a second motive. He is quick to abandon a plan when it begins to resemble an order, even when cooperation would clearly be wiser.
Quirks
Background
Cael Varr served in the border legions of a fracturing barony, where soldiers were ordered to hold roads no lord bothered to maintain and defend villages no commander remembered. He learned to read tracks before he learned to read maps, and he became the unit's scout after leading a starving patrol home through three days of blizzard. Cael survived battles, ambushes, and one disastrous retreat, but he never stopped believing that the people behind the lines deserved better than the officers who spent their lives moving markers on maps. When his commander ordered his company to burn a frontier settlement suspected of aiding rebels, Cael refused. He helped the villagers escape into the forest, deserted before dawn, and vanished into the wilds. Since then, he has worked as a guide, bounty hunter, and monster slayer, accepting contracts from almost anyone who pays honestly. His years as a soldier taught him discipline, but the years after taught him suspicion. He follows his own judgment now, protecting people when he chooses and refusing to serve any banner that demands obedience without conscience.
