Features
6 featuresAction
- Divine SenseLevel 1
As an action, Kael can open his awareness to detect the presence of strong evil or good until the end of his next turn. He knows the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet that is not behind total cover, and he knows the type of any being whose presence he senses, but not its identity. He can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 plus his Charisma modifier, regaining all expended uses after a long rest.
Always on
- Lay on HandsLevel 1
Kael's blessed touch can restore hit points. He has a pool of healing power that replenishes when he finishes a long rest. With an action, he can touch a creature and restore a number of hit points from the pool, up to the amount remaining. He can also expend 5 hit points from the pool to cure one disease or neutralize one poison affecting the creature. This feature has no effect on undead or constructs.
- DarkvisionTieflingKael can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. He cannot distinguish color in darkness, only shades of gray.
- Hellish ResistanceTieflingKael has resistance to fire damage.
- Infernal LegacyTieflingKael knows the thaumaturgy cantrip. At 3rd level, he can cast hellish rebuke once per long rest as a 2nd-level spell. At 5th level, he can cast darkness once per long rest. Charisma is his spellcasting ability for these spells.
- Military RankSoldier
Kael retains his military rank and can invoke the authority of his former command structure. Soldiers loyal to his old unit recognize him, offer limited aid, and may provide access to military camps and resources when doing so does not place them in obvious danger.

Appearance
Kael is a broad-shouldered tiefling with charcoal-red skin, swept-back black hair, and sturdy ivory horns polished smooth by years of handling armor and weapons. His amber eyes are steady and observant, and his tail is wrapped in a simple leather guard to keep it from catching on shields or brush. His palms are heavily callused, his uniform posture is unmistakable, and before he speaks he draws a slow breath through his nose as though silently measuring the situation. His voice is low, precise, and carrying, the practiced voice of someone accustomed to giving orders across a battlefield.
Mannerisms
He stands at attention when listening to anyone who is frightened or giving testimony. Before answering a difficult question, he inhales slowly through his nose. He addresses people by rank or respectful title until invited to do otherwise, and he instinctively checks doors, exits, and the condition of nearby shields.
Personality
Calm, formal, and quietly compassionate. Kael speaks little in crowded rooms, but he notices who is being ignored and makes space for them. He is patient with fear, intolerant of cruelty, and surprisingly dry-witted when camp life becomes uncomfortable. He prefers clear promises to grand speeches and measures friendship by whether someone stands their watch.
Ideals
Duty. Law exists to protect people, not to excuse those in power. I will obey honorable commands, challenge cruel ones, and accept the consequences of doing what is right.
Bonds
He remains fiercely loyal to the villagers he saved and sends part of every reward to help rebuild their homes. He also carries his former unit's battered standard, believing that its fallen soldiers deserve to be remembered for more than the commander's failure.
Flaws
Kael has difficulty recognizing when an order is merely practical rather than morally binding. He can become rigid, suspicious of improvisation, and quietly judgmental toward anyone who abandons a plan. When civilians are threatened, his discipline can collapse into reckless self-sacrifice.
Quirks
Background
Kael Ashbound was born in a frontier garrison where tiefling blood was treated as a warning before it was treated as a fact. His mother served as a quartermaster, and his father was a camp smith who taught him that every buckle, blade, and shield strap represented a life someone expected to return home. Kael enlisted young, determined to become useful enough that no one could reduce him to the shape of his horns. He rose to the rank of corporal through discipline rather than charm, becoming known for holding defensive lines, keeping frightened recruits organized, and refusing orders that treated civilians as expendable obstacles. During a winter campaign, Kael's unit was ordered to abandon a village while raiders advanced. His commander called the villagers an acceptable loss. Kael stayed, organized a fighting retreat, and brought most of them safely behind the fortifications. The act saved lives but ended his military career. In the chapel afterward, while exhausted and ashamed of the comrades he could not save, he swore an oath to protect the helpless and uphold law without allowing law to become an excuse for cruelty. Whether his divine power comes from a celestial patron, the strength of that vow, or something older within his infernal heritage, Kael now travels as a paladin seeking worthy causes, honorable allies, and a chance to prove that obedience is not the same thing as goodness.
