Appearance
Kett Vargan is a broad, weather-darkened human man with a thick neck, heavy shoulders, and the deliberate posture of someone who has spent decades carrying weight and watching horizons. His skin is roughened by wind, rain, dust, and campfire smoke. A pale, puckered wound marks the left side of his abdomen beneath the ribs, visible only when he changes shirts, while a web of fine white lines across his back records the sorcerer's healing magic. He keeps his iron-gray hair cropped close and wears a neatly trimmed beard. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that he occupies space like a tent pole, standing solidly upright even when exhausted, and that he lowers his voice rather than raising it when angry.
Mannerisms
Kett checks the nearest exit before sitting, folds letters into exact thirds, and taps the cover of his gray book twice before opening it. When someone speaks emotionally, he watches their hands instead of their face. He calls every spell he casts a 'maneuver' and apologizes to furniture after bumping into it.
Personality
Kett is patient, practical, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people. He speaks in concise reports, dislikes boasting, and treats meals as serious occasions. He has the reflexes of a veteran, but not the emotional distance. He remembers the names of enlisted soldiers, stable hands, cooks, and sentries long after officers have forgotten them.
Ideals
A life spared is a debt owed. Power is worthwhile only when it is used to keep someone else from being discarded.
Bonds
Tovik Sarr saved my life and gave me shelter when my regiment abandoned me. I will protect him from anyone who comes seeking the gray book, even if the book's own patron objects.
Flaws
I obey written instructions too readily, especially when they resemble military orders. I also hide pain until it becomes someone else's problem, then insist that the problem is minor.
Quirks
Background
Kett Vargan served nearly three decades in a border regiment, first as a shield carrier and later as a field sergeant responsible for getting frightened young soldiers through bad weather and worse orders. He was not famous, and he never wanted to be. His strength was steadiness. When a failed assault left him crushed beneath a fallen siege frame, his company withdrew without realizing he still lived. A traveling sorcerer named Tovik Sarr found him days later, feverish and half buried in mud, and spent nearly all of his remaining magical strength keeping Kett alive. Kett recovered in Tovik's isolated tower, where he expected to repay his debt through labor. Instead, while dusting the tower's library, he found a narrow book bound in gray hide. Its pages contained no author's name, only diagrams that seemed to shift when viewed in candlelight. Reading aloud from it opened a conversation with something patient, distant, and impossibly old. The entity offered Kett power in exchange for carrying its written signs into the world and locating other books marked with the same symbol. Kett accepted, not out of hunger for glory, but because Tovik's healing had given him a life with no clear orders. The book gave him a direction, though he remains unsure whether it is a road or a leash.
