Appearance

A lean, imposing Shadar-Kai man with ash-gray skin, long black hair streaked with silver, and sharp elven features. His eyes are colorless gray, like moonlight reflected on dead water. He wears battered chain mail beneath a dark cloak, with a black raven-feather clasp and a shield marked by a cracked silver sun. His expression is almost entirely emotionless, except when confronted by undead or reminders of the Raven Queen, when his hatred becomes unmistakable.

Mannerisms

Vaelis speaks in a quiet, measured voice and rarely uses contractions. He stands perfectly still when listening, tilting his head like a raven studying carrion. Before entering a room, he counts the exits. When undead are near, he stops blinking and grips his sword until his knuckles whiten.

Personality

Emotionless and intensely observant, Vaelis treats every conversation like an investigation. He is unexpectedly gentle toward frightened children, the homeless, and anyone who has been abandoned. He does not understand humor well, but occasionally repeats jokes with perfect seriousness. His compassion is expressed through practical action rather than warmth.

Ideals

The living deserve the freedom to choose their own path. No god, death cult, or undead tyrant has the right to turn mortal lives into possessions.

Bonds

The priest who sheltered me gave me a name and a purpose. I will protect his temple and every innocent person who seeks refuge there. I also carry a broken black mask taken from the first Shadar-Kai executioner I slew, and I will one day return it to the Shadowfell as a symbol of defiance.

Flaws

I mistake emotional numbness for discipline and often dismiss the grief, joy, or fear of others as weaknesses. My hatred of undead can become so consuming that I risk the lives of companions to destroy a single necromancer or corpse. I am terrified that the Raven Queen can still reclaim what remains of my soul.

Quirks

Collects black feathers but refuses to explain why.
Keeps a written list of emotions he remembers and crosses them out when they return.
Leaves a coin beside every corpse he destroys, so the dead are not abandoned.
Refers to undead as trespassers rather than monsters.

Background

Born beneath the dead skies of the Shadowfell, Vaelis Veyr was raised among Shadar-Kai who served the Raven Queen and treated emotion as a weakness to be discarded. He learned to move silently through mausoleums, ruined keeps, and corpse-choked streets, stealing food from the living and carrying messages for the dead. When a ritual left him hollowed of nearly every feeling, Vaelis fled. He crossed into the Material Plane through a forgotten shadow crossing and awoke in the alleys of a crowded city with no warmth in his heart, no grief for what he had abandoned, and no loyalty to the goddess whose servants had shaped his life. Only one emotion survived the crossing, hatred. Vaelis hates the emptiness inside himself, hates the Raven Queen's shadow over his bloodline, and hates every undead creature that treats the living world as a place to be harvested. A kindly old priest found him starving beneath a market bridge and taught him that a weapon could protect rather than dominate. Vaelis took up the oath of vengeance, dedicating his strength to destroying undead that prey upon mortals. He still knows the hidden alleys, rooftop routes, and criminal signs of the city, but now he uses that knowledge to hunt necromancers, rescue the vulnerable, and make certain that no corpse rises unchallenged.
