Appearance
Kareem Tikkanen is a broad-shouldered human with warm olive skin, dark brown hair cut close at the sides, and a neatly kept beard marked with a single premature streak of silver. He stands very straight but rests most of his weight on the balls of his feet, as if prepared to step between danger and another person without thinking. His chain mail is kept meticulously clean beneath a blue-gray surcoat bearing a simple white sunburst. He wears a copper prayer ring on his right hand and carries a weathered prayer book whose corners have been softened by years of use. Before speaking, he takes a quiet breath through his nose and briefly lowers his chin, giving even ordinary answers the gravity of a formal vow.
Mannerisms
Kareem pauses for one measured breath before answering difficult questions. When listening, he angles his body slightly toward the speaker and keeps both hands visible. He counts under his breath in Finnish when anxious, and his voice becomes quieter, not louder, when he is angry.
Personality
Patient, formal, and quietly warm, Kareem treats every conversation as an opportunity to restore dignity. He notices who has not eaten, who is being ignored, and who is pretending not to be afraid. He prefers practical kindness over grand speeches, but when a vow must be spoken, his voice carries with startling authority.
Ideals
Duty. A promise is a structure people can stand beneath. If I give my word, I will keep it, and if a law crushes the helpless, my duty is to repair the law rather than worship its damage.
Bonds
The House of the Open Hand gave me food, education, and a purpose. I will defend its people and repay its trust, even when doing so costs me comfort, reputation, or blood.
Flaws
I am slow to forgive deliberate cruelty, especially when it is hidden behind procedure, rank, or respectable clothing. When I believe a law has failed the innocent, I am tempted to break it openly and dare the world to call that wrong.
Quirks
Background
Kareem Tikkanen was raised in a river-port district where three languages were spoken in every market and every faith kept a shrine near the docks. His mother copied legal contracts for caravan masters, while his father repaired lamps for the House of the Open Hand. Kareem entered the temple as a child after spending a winter night sheltering beneath its steps. The priests taught him letters, discipline, and the idea that law exists to protect the vulnerable rather than merely restrain them. He learned the old prayers in Common and the careful cadences of temple liturgy, then began accompanying clerics who tended the sick, settled disputes, and buried the forgotten dead.
