Appearance
Jack is a lean human man with expressive eyebrows, a theatrical smile, and a carefully drawn-on black mustache that he refreshes every morning with charcoal and stage grease. He wears a flamboyant purple button-up vest embroidered with curling green vines over a loose cream shirt, fitted trousers, and well-polished boots. His leather armor is hidden beneath his performance clothes. A pair of beautifully balanced whips hang from his belt, their handles worn smooth where his palms have practiced the same flourishes thousands of times. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice his peculiar pre-performance sound, a soft throat-clear followed by a deliberate pause before he delivers even the simplest sentence.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, Jack clears his throat softly, pauses as if waiting for an audience to settle, and then delivers his words with exaggerated confidence. He punctuates jokes with tiny wrist flicks, taps rhythms against his thigh, and occasionally cracks one whip once when he wants a conversation to end.
Personality
Jack is theatrical, quick-witted, shamelessly confident, and incapable of leaving a melody unspoiled. He treats every conversation as a possible stage act and every powerful person as an unfinished punchline. Beneath the bravado, he is observant and surprisingly generous, especially toward working performers and ordinary people being pushed around by authority.
Ideals
Freedom. Every person should be able to laugh at the powerful, leave a bad employer, and choose their own song. Anyone who tries to own another person's life deserves a parody.
Bonds
The traveling fair that raised Jack is his true family. He sends part of every substantial reward back to the fairground workers and will take extraordinary risks to protect performers, laborers, and anyone being exploited by wealthy patrons.
Flaws
Jack cannot resist turning a serious situation into a performance, especially when silence would clearly be wiser. He lies reflexively about being French, treats criticism as an invitation to improvise, and would rather risk danger than admit he has forgotten someone's name.
Quirks
Background
Jack was born human in a traveling fair that crossed borders so often that his family stopped explaining which country they came from. He learned early that a crowd will forgive almost anything if the rhythm is good. While other performers mastered juggling, knife throwing, or trained animals, Jack discovered that a whip could crack on the beat, curl through the air like a ribbon, and punctuate a terrible parody with perfect comic timing. He became the fair's resident singer, heckler, and self-appointed master of ceremonies, turning popular songs into ridiculous ballads about bad kings, vain nobles, and horses with questionable morals. His stage identity grew more elaborate with every season. The purple vest came from a bankrupt opera troupe, the green vines were painted by Jack himself, and the mustache began as a joke that became impossible to abandon. He calls himself French with absolute confidence, despite offering a different explanation of his birthplace whenever anyone asks. After a nobleman took offense at one of Jack's parodies and tried to have him arrested, Jack escaped by whipping a chandelier loose, improvising a verse about the man's haircut, and fleeing with a band of adventurers who appreciated his timing. Now he travels as a bard and professional nuisance, performing at fairs, taverns, and battlefields, always looking for a bigger crowd, a better punchline, and someone important enough to deserve a song.
