Appearance
Nim is a lean, long-limbed female tabaxi with tawny-gold fur patterned in dark rosettes, a white muzzle, and bright amber eyes that seem to measure every exit in the room. She wears well-maintained leather armor beneath a patched performer’s coat, with a rapier at her hip and a shortbow kept within easy reach. A small brass bell is tied to one wrist, a keepsake from the innkeeper she once called family. She smells faintly of cedar oil, lamp smoke, and the citrus peel she compulsively rubs between her fingers when nervous.
Mannerisms
Nim constantly checks the brass bell on her wrist with the thumb and forefinger of her opposite hand. She pauses before sitting, glancing beneath tables and toward windows, and tilts her head toward unfamiliar sounds even while continuing a conversation.
Personality
Nim is quick-witted, suspicious, and theatrically charming when she wants something. She treats conversation like a performance, shifting accents and expressions to test how people react. Beneath the swagger, she is fiercely loyal to anyone who shows kindness without demanding obedience in return. She laughs easily at danger, but goes very quiet whenever someone mentions Hobb Vell or the lawman who framed her.
Ideals
Freedom. No law deserves obedience merely because it wears a badge. People should be judged by what they do, not by the stories powerful people tell about them.
Bonds
Hobb Vell’s brass wrist bell is the one possession Nim refuses to sell, abandon, or remove. She will risk almost anything to clear his name and expose Corven Bale.
Flaws
Nim assumes every authority figure is corrupt until personally proven otherwise. She cannot resist provoking a smug bully, especially if backing down would be safer. When frightened, she lies too quickly and sometimes forgets which version of the truth she told to whom.
Quirks
Background
Nim learned early that a room full of distracted people was safer than an empty alley. She sang, danced, juggled knives, and played a battered hand drum in roadside inns, using the noise and movement of performance to make herself impossible to watch closely. Her favorite venue was the Lantern and Ladle, run by Hobb Vell, an innkeeper who treated her like a troublesome niece rather than a stray cat with quick hands. Hobb taught her which guests were dangerous, which guards could be bribed, and when a smile was more useful than a blade. Nim repaid him by keeping thieves away from his patrons, though she never admitted how often she did so by stealing their tools before they could use them. One winter morning, Hobb was found dead in his office, and a bag of gold belonging to a local magistrate had vanished. Nim had been seen entering the office the night before, and the crooked lawman Corven Bale was waiting with a convenient story about her greed and temper. The evidence was staged, the witnesses were threatened, and Hobb’s dying reputation was used to make the accusation believable. Nim escaped only because a kitchen girl slipped her a warning through the laundry chute. Now she travels under false names, performing for supper while searching for the missing gold and proof that Bale arranged the murder. She wants justice for Hobb, but every day on the run makes revenge feel more satisfying than the truth.
“Hobb taught her which guests were dangerous, which guards could be bribed, and when a smile was more useful than a blade.”
