Appearance
A broad-shouldered half-orc with iron-gray hair cropped close to the scalp, a flattened nose, and a thick scar running from his left temple to the corner of his mouth. His tusks are filed slightly, not for vanity but because an officer once claimed they made him look insubordinate. He wears his chain mail over a padded work vest, keeps his boots meticulously maintained, and carries himself with the quiet, economical posture of someone who has spent decades watching doors, crowds, and hands.
Mannerisms
Brak checks exits, windows, and the weight of furniture whenever he enters a room. He taps two fingers against his shield when thinking, addresses strangers by their observed trade before asking their names, and unconsciously straightens crooked objects on tables and shelves.
Personality
Brak is practical, observant, and unexpectedly cheerful when given a tangible task. He likes sturdy tools, strong tea, clean lines, and people who say exactly what they need. He distrusts speeches but respects competence wherever he finds it, including in criminals, merchants, and rival adventurers. Around frightened people, his rough voice becomes patient and methodical.
Ideals
Useful work is honorable work. A person earns respect by what they carry, repair, protect, and finish, not by the insignia they wear.
Bonds
He still protects three former recruits who were scapegoated after his resignation, sending them money and quietly gathering proof that their disgrace was manufactured. He also keeps his old service insignia, not as a symbol of loyalty to the army, but as a reminder of the people he failed to protect from its politics.
Flaws
He assumes every institution is corrupt once it becomes large enough, and he can sabotage useful cooperation by treating ordinary mistakes as the beginning of a conspiracy. He is also incapable of ignoring a challenge to his competence, especially from a polished officer or wealthy employer.
Quirks
Background
Brak Tovan enlisted young, partly because the army promised regular meals and partly because his mother said a uniform would make people think twice before deciding what he was. He proved unusually good at the work. He could read a street the way another soldier read a map, remember every face in a checkpoint line, and turn a chaotic retreat into an orderly movement of people and wagons. He rose through the ranks by solving ugly problems, protecting officers who did not deserve it, and making sure frightened recruits came home alive. The higher Brak climbed, the less he trusted the ladder. Promotions went to cousins, flatterers, and men who knew how to salute at the right angle while quietly selling supplies. When a politically connected captain abandoned a district during a riot, Brak was ordered to take the blame for the missing patrol. He refused, resigned before the tribunal could ruin him, and left with nothing but his pay, his service coat, and a battered set of construction tools. Since then, he has worked as a bodyguard, laborer, bouncer, and occasional enforcer. He genuinely enjoys honest work. A wall either stands or it does not, a drunk either leaves the tavern or gets carried out, and a client is safe because Brak did the job correctly, not because someone signed the right paper. Adventure interests him because it is dangerous work with unusually clear standards.
