Appearance
A broad-shouldered male dwarf with iron-gray hair braided close to the skull and a square beard bound with a single copper ring. His nose is blunt and reddened from cold marches, and his dark brown eyes are quick, alert, and unexpectedly warm. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a weathered red-brown military coat. The most noticeable thing about him is an old leather field journal strapped flat against his left hip, its lower corner polished pale from years of being thumbed while he thinks. Before speaking, he pauses, draws a quiet breath through his nose, and clears his throat once, as if arranging his words in ranks.
Mannerisms
He pauses before answering, takes one quiet breath through his nose, and clears his throat once. When listening to a plan, he taps the worn corner of his field journal with two fingers. When angry, he becomes more polite, not less.
Personality
Khurdan is direct, observant, and protective without being sentimental about it. He treats every group like a squad until proven otherwise, assigning practical roles, checking supplies, and making sure the quietest person has been heard. His humor is dry and badly timed, usually arriving immediately after a crisis. Despite his rough military manner, he is gentle with frightened people and surprisingly patient with children, animals, and anyone trying honestly to learn.
Ideals
Freedom. No commander, lord, or sacred tradition has the right to make a person disposable. Authority must earn obedience every day.
Bonds
The surviving members of his old squad are his family, and he will cross any distance to answer a call from one of them. He also carries the names of the refugees he saved, written in his field journal, and considers their survival a debt he must keep repaying.
Flaws
He has little patience for hesitation once danger is clear, and can mistake caution for cowardice. He also keeps mental tallies of every favor, sacrifice, and broken promise, even when he insists that he does not.
Quirks
Background
Khurdan Varkesh was born in a stonehold where every family kept a record of its dead and every child learned to count by names. He entered the hold's professional army young, not because he loved obedience, but because he was good at noticing the small failures that got people killed. A loose buckle, a missing ration crate, a sentry who stopped humming. Khurdan became a squad leader, then a field sergeant, earning a reputation for improbable plans and a refusal to abandon anyone who could still stand. His company was eventually ordered to burn a mountain village suspected of aiding raiders. Khurdan discovered that the supposed enemy had been sheltering refugees, including dwarves from his own hold. He disobeyed, turned his soldiers against the order, and led the villagers through an old mining route to safety. The army stripped him of rank, but the surviving soldiers still call him Sergeant Varkesh. Now he travels as a fighter for hire and a protector of the overlooked, carrying the names of every person his choices saved, and several whose names he learned too late.
