Appearance

Ellora is a strong, broad-shouldered human woman with weather-browned skin, dark auburn hair kept in a severe braid, and amber-brown eyes that seem to measure every exit in a room. She keeps her clothing and equipment meticulously clean despite living on the road. Her movements are quiet and deliberate, but when angered she becomes unnervingly still, as though waiting for prey to make a mistake. A heavy fur-lined cloak hangs from her shoulders, and she wears a carved bear claw on a cord around her neck.

Mannerisms

Ellora checks the wind before answering difficult questions and unconsciously angles her body between companions and the nearest exit. She cleans her blades after every fight, even when they are already spotless. When forced to sleep indoors, she keeps one hand closed around her bear-claw pendant.

Personality

Ellora is reserved, observant, and bluntly practical. She speaks little around strangers but notices everything, from a broken twig to a tremor in someone's voice. She has a dry sense of humor that appears at unexpected moments, and she is gentler with frightened animals than she is with most people. Her self-control is deliberate rather than natural, built from constant fear that one careless emotion could give the curse more room to act.

Ideals

Freedom. No creature should be owned by its nature, its blood, or another person's cruelty. I will master the beast within me, or die refusing to serve it.

Bonds

Varric, the hunter who infected her, must die by Ellora's hand. She also remains fiercely protective of the remote settlement that raised her, especially the children who still believe she will return cured.

Flaws

Ellora cannot let an insult, threat, or unexplained disappearance go unanswered if it might be connected to Varric. She is also terrified that her determination to destroy the curse is slowly becoming an excuse to indulge the violence it brings.

Quirks

She names every trail she survives, even if no one else will ever see the map.
She refuses to eat bear meat and becomes visibly tense when someone jokes about it.
She counts her breaths in groups of five whenever she feels the curse stirring.
She leaves small bundles of herbs at crossroads for lost travelers.

Background

Ellora was raised beyond the last surveyed road, in a scattered human settlement where hunters, trappers, and herbalists traded knowledge as readily as they traded meat. She learned to read weather through the smell of distant rain, to follow a wounded animal without rushing it, and to sleep lightly beneath trees. Her strength made her a capable hunter, while her patience and practical judgment made her useful as a guide through forests and high country. She became known for bringing lost travelers home, even when the journey led into country where no sensible person would willingly go. That life ended when a wandering hunter named Varric came to the settlement during a winter storm. He seemed charming, knowledgeable, and strangely familiar with the wilderness. One night, he revealed his curse and attacked Ellora, leaving her infected with the curse of the Lycan-bear. Since then, the change has come upon her during moments of extreme emotion, filling her body with unnatural strength and violent instinct. Ellora refuses to surrender to it. She has taken up the trail of Varric, learning every rumor about his movements and every weakness that might let her kill him. She believes that ending his life is the only way to reclaim her own, though a quiet part of her fears that the beast inside her may be waiting for the hunt to end so it can choose a new master.
