Appearance
A wiry rock gnome with bright copper hair, ink-stained fingers, oversized round spectacles, and a traveling robe lined with pockets for notes, chalk, and tiny curios. His face is animated and clever, with a quick grin that appears just before a risky idea does.
Mannerisms
He speaks rapidly, punctuates important points with a tapping finger to the temple, and pauses midsentence whenever a new idea distracts him. When thinking, he straightens imaginary papers in perfect little stacks.
Personality
Alert, curious, and cheerfully irreverent, Berrin treats every mystery like a puzzle box and every authority like a suggestion. He is warm with allies, maddening with pedants, and quietly generous when someone is trapped by ignorance.
Ideals
Knowledge is freedom, but only if it is used boldly. Truth should be found, not worshipped, and no authority should own the whole story.
Bonds
He still carries the brass key to the tower library and intends to reopen its sealed lower vault someday, even if he has to bargain with spirits, thieves, or kings to do it.
Flaws
He cannot resist opening sealed doors, reading forbidden pages, or testing whether a prophecy can be tricked. When an answer seems too easy, he assumes someone is lying, probably to his face.

Background
Berrin Tallow was born in a gnome burrow that treated curiosity like a sacred flame. While other children delighted in tricks and clockwork toys, Berrin delighted in footnotes, star charts, and arguments that lasted until moonrise. He was the sort of child who asked why a spell worked, then why the answer was written that way, then why the first answer had ever been trusted. His questions made him useful to elders, annoying to priests, and indispensable to any visitor who needed a missing fact unearthed from a dusty shelf. As a young man, Berrin was invited to assist a sage who maintained a half-ruined tower library on the edge of civilized land. There he learned that knowledge is not always patient, and that some truths bite back when handled carelessly. One sealed vault, one cracked astral lens, and one impossible glimpse of tomorrow later, he discovered a talent for divination that felt less like study and more like eavesdropping on fate. He left the tower with a spellbook full of careful notes, a habit of taking impossible chances, and a belief that destiny is merely another system waiting to be outwitted. Now he travels where rumors gather, chasing lost lore, forbidden diagrams, and any mystery that looks clever enough to survive his attention.
