Appearance
Brynna is a compact, dark-skinned dwarf with a broad, sturdy build and thick brown hair worn in two short braids tied with faded blue cord. She wears carefully patched leather armor beneath a weather-softened gray coat. Knives of every practical shape occupy her belt, boots, bracers, shoulder strap, and hidden wrist sheaths, including kitchen blades, narrow stilettos, hooked utility knives, and a broad skinning knife. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that she rarely looks at faces. Her eyes travel to doors, hands, windows, ceiling beams, and the empty spaces beneath tables. She smells faintly of leather oil, street dust, and crushed mint, a scent she insists is simply what clean living smells like.
Mannerisms
Brynna tests every chair before sitting, counts exits under her breath when entering a room, and rolls a different knife across her knuckles whenever she is thinking. She addresses animals more politely than nobles and calls all locked containers 'shy little boxes.'
Personality
Brynna is gentle with the frightened, exacting with the careless, and quietly amused by anyone who thinks wealth makes them difficult to rob. She dislikes grand speeches and prefers useful questions, clean exits, and promises that can be kept. Her humor is dry enough to pass for criticism, but she is more protective than she wants anyone to notice.
Ideals
Practical Mercy. A person with food, shelter, and a way out can become better than their worst decision. I will always leave someone a route to survive, even if I must make them pay for it later.
Bonds
Oco vanished after taking the blame for a burglary committed by a wealthy merchant's heir. Brynna still carries the chipped little knife he gave her, and she intends to find him, clear his name, or make the guilty family pay for every year he lost.
Flaws
Brynna cannot leave a useful knife behind, even when taking it would be foolish. She is suspicious of generosity, especially when it comes without a price, and she sometimes turns a simple disagreement into a private contest of cleverness that nobody else knows is happening.
Quirks
Background
Brynna was born beneath the market district of Caer Nerin, where the old dwarf quarter had been swallowed by newer streets and nobody bothered to ask which children belonged to which family. Her mother sold hot chestnuts, her father repaired buckles, and both disappeared during a winter of bad debts and worse landlords. Brynna survived by carrying messages, finding lost pets, and learning which shopkeepers preferred a missing onion to a missing coin. An older street child named Oco taught her the first rule of city life: every door has a sound, and every sound has a use. He also taught her to keep a knife close, not because she was eager to fight, but because a blade could cut rope, pry a shutter, divide food, or remind a bully that she was not helpless.
