Appearance
Rex is a lean human man with a scholar's posture and a gambler's restless hands. A pale scar coils tightly around his neck like a remembered noose or a severed halo, and his mismatched, over-alert eyes seem to measure every room for exits, lies, and leverage. He dresses in modest monkish layers worn over practical travel gear, but he always looks slightly too elegant for the road, as if he cannot stop himself from arranging his own silhouette like a con.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly, like someone sharing a secret even in an empty room. When thinking, he counts possibilities on the pads of his fingers and smiles at the least likely outcome.
Personality
Rex is courteous in the way a knife can be polished, careful, sharp, and meant to be looked at before it is used. He enjoys conversation, riddles, and moral ambiguity, but beneath the mischief is a disciplined mind that never stops planning three moves ahead.
Ideals
Freedom. No god, king, monastery, or law should own a soul completely. If power can be stolen back, then it can also be taken from those who claim they deserve it.
Bonds
The monastery that raised him, even if they fear him, remains the closest thing Rex has to a family. He will not allow its gates to be profaned or its humble brothers harmed.
Flaws
Rex cannot resist a clever con, a hidden wager, or a secret he has not yet unraveled. He lies so naturally that even when he tells the truth, people should not expect him to sound convincing.
Quirks
Background
Rex Fenton was found as an infant on the stone doorstep of a secluded monastery, wrapped in plain cloth and marked by a horrifying scar that circled his neck like an executioner's memory. The monks raised him with care, but never with complete ease. Even as a child, his eyes held a depth that made the elder brothers go quiet, as though they were looking at someone who had already lived an entire life and then some. He learned prayers by rote, silence by necessity, and the value of a hidden motive from years spent listening to confessions that were never meant for his ears. As Rex grew, so did the strange certainty that he was not merely blessed, but occupied. In dreams he saw a dead god with a bright, mocking smile, a god of cheats, liars, wagers, betrayals, and secrets. Phenax had been slain in Theros, but death did not end his schemes. His soul wandered the planes until it found Rex, and the boy's divine spark latched onto the ancient trickster's essence like a key finding its lock. Now Rex walks the world as a divine soul sorcerer, outwardly a monk-taught acolyte, inwardly the reincarnation of a murdered deity. He plans with obsessive patience, lies with sincere conviction, and hoards every scrap of gossip like treasure. One day he will return to Theros, reclaim what was stolen from him, and teach the heroes who beheaded a god that the last laugh can endure across lifetimes.
“The monks raised him with care, but never with complete ease.”
