Appearance
Bergi Everglade is a broad, sturdy female tortle with warm olive-green skin and bright, observant eyes behind wire-framed glasses twisted from living vines. Her large shell is patterned with carefully cultivated moss in shades of emerald, gold, blue-green, and russet, arranged like an intricate mosaic of natural tiles. Small leather pouches are fitted into the shell's interior, allowing her to carry herbs, notes, tools, and vials even while fully retracted. She wears a dust-stained frontier coat, a faded neckerchief, sturdy boots, and a wide hat reinforced with stitched reeds. Her clothing is patched with mismatched pieces of canvas, but her vine glasses are constantly polished. She moves with a slow, deliberate gait until someone she protects is threatened, at which point she becomes startlingly quick and purposeful.
Mannerisms
Bergi adjusts her vine glasses with one claw before answering difficult questions. She pauses to smell the wind during conversations, taps a claw against glass when thinking, and speaks to plants as though they are quiet colleagues. When angry, she becomes unnervingly still and begins organizing her pouches by size.
Personality
Bergi is a reserved, sharp-minded recluse who prefers the company of wetlands, old books, and carefully labeled jars to crowded taverns. She is patient with frightened animals and sick strangers, but impatient with waste, arrogance, and anyone who treats the wilderness as an obstacle. Her kindness is practical rather than sentimental, expressed through repaired gear, exact directions, clean water, and remedies left beside a sleeping companion.
Ideals
Freedom. No tyrant, land baron, priest, or academic owns the natural world. Life thrives best when people are allowed to choose their own paths and protect one another.
Bonds
She owes a life-debt to the travelers who once rescued her from a collapsing alchemical still, and she will cross any distance to protect them. She is also fiercely bound to the marshlands that raised her and considers every poisoned spring, burned grove, or exploited settlement a personal insult.
Flaws
Bergi withdraws completely when surrounded by too many people, sometimes retreating into her shell rather than explain herself. She is dangerously overconfident in her ability to improve any remedy, potion, or explosive, and she has a habit of treating warnings as interesting experimental suggestions.
Quirks
Background
Bergi Everglade was raised in the reed marshes beyond the last surveyed wells, where tortle families built homes beneath cypress roots and traded medicines to passing caravans. She became fascinated by the contrast between natural healing and frontier alchemy, learning to read the language of leaves, fungi, and animal tracks while also experimenting with glass vials, mineral salts, and volatile swamp gases. Her experiments eventually produced a glowing green poultice capable of closing wounds, though several sheds and one abandoned water tower were lost during the process. After a fever swept through a nearby frontier settlement, Bergi secluded herself for years in a half-sunken watchtower, refining her remedies and recording every result in waterproof notebooks. Her solitude ended when a group of travelers she had once saved returned to ask for help against a land baron poisoning the local watershed. Bergi joined them reluctantly, bound by gratitude and furious at the desecration of the marsh. Now she travels between dusty towns and wild places, protecting those who earn her trust, repaying life-debts without hesitation, and carrying both a healing poultice and a smoking vial because she believes preparation means having two answers to every problem. she lives in a bog.
