Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, ash-blond hair cut short for war, and cold gray eyes ringed by sleepless shadows. A jagged scar crosses his left cheek and disappears beneath the collar of his battered chain mail. His armor is meticulously maintained but marked with old burns and dark stains. He carries a longsword with a blackened fuller, a shield bearing the defaced crest of a fallen household, and a light crossbow kept ready for distant targets. In moments of extreme pain, faint crimson lines appear beneath his skin, and a translucent, indistinct echo of his movements seems to fight beside him.
Mannerisms
He checks the edge of his longsword whenever conversation becomes emotional. He stands with his back to walls, keeps his shield within arm's reach while resting, and answers questions with the formality of a knight addressing a superior, even when speaking to enemies.
Personality
Caelan is disciplined, quiet, and intensely observant. He speaks with restrained courtesy, but his politeness feels like the final layer of armor over a cold and predatory mind. He rarely raises his voice, believing anger should be expressed through action rather than words. He respects competence, despises waste, and instinctively studies every person as a possible threat, asset, or future casualty.
Ideals
Purpose. A person without a mission is already dead. Any oath, no matter how cruel its demands, is better than the emptiness that follows its abandonment.
Bonds
He carries the broken signet of his former master and is bound to complete the final mission entrusted to him, even if the task destroys what remains of his humanity.
Flaws
He cannot accept that his master chose a doomed cause, so he blames himself for the defeat instead. He treats compassion as a liability, manipulates allies when necessary, and is dangerously willing to sacrifice innocents if it advances his mission. He fears that without a purpose he will either become a monster or deliberately seek death.
Quirks
Background
Sir Caelan Veyr once believed service could give a life meaning. He swore himself to a noble master, learned the rituals of knighthood, and devoted every breath to the defense of a borderland keep. His oath gave him a name, a home, and a purpose. Then the keep fell in a single night. His master died without an heir, the household was scattered, and those Caelan loved were killed, taken, or forced to abandon him. He survived only because he refused to stop fighting after everyone else had fallen. He no longer calls himself a knight. In his mind, a knight must have someone to serve, and Caelan has no master left. Yet the discipline remains. He trains before dawn, maintains his weapons with ritual precision, and advances toward danger with the calm of a man who has already lost everything. A strange echo follows him in battle, mimicking his strikes from impossible angles. Caelan does not know whether it is a supernatural companion, a fragment of his shattered mind, or the remnant of an oath that refuses to die. His blood carries a more dangerous inheritance. When pain overwhelms him or the battlefield is drenched in blood, something ancient stirs within him. His movements sharpen, his strength surges, and mercy disappears entirely. Each surrender to that power makes the transformation easier and more complete. Only a mission entrusted to him after the fall of his household keeps him moving. He does not pursue hope, glory, or forgiveness. He pursues the mission because without it, he fears there is nothing left inside him but a weapon waiting to be unleashed.
