Appearance
Branik Vorel is a broad-shouldered male tiefling with brick-red skin, blunt black horns, a strong jaw, and a thick tail that curls around the leg of his chair when he is thinking. His dark hair is clipped short in the practical style of a former soldier. He wears a patched military coat over a plain shirt, with the coat's left cuff repeatedly mended in pale thread. A battered brass whistle hangs from a cord at his throat, its surface worn smooth where his thumb rubs it before every performance. His lute is functional rather than elegant, with one carefully replaced tuning peg and a leather strap repaired with saddle stitches.
Mannerisms
Branik checks the knot of his whistle's cord whenever he enters a new room. He taps out marching rhythms with his thumb when impatient, and he gives people nicknames based on the sound of their footsteps.
Personality
Plainspoken, observant, and stubbornly kind. Branik listens like a sentry on watch, noticing who has been left out of a conversation and who is pretending not to be afraid. He dislikes grand speeches unless he is the one giving them, and he has a dry sense of humor that appears most clearly under pressure.
Ideals
Freedom. No command is sacred when it demands cruelty from people who have no choice.
Bonds
The survivors of his old company are his family. He will cross any distance to protect them, and he quietly sends part of every reward to widows and families left behind by the war.
Flaws
He distrusts comfortable authority and can turn a reasonable disagreement into a mutiny before he notices. He also keeps helping people who have not earned his help, because abandoning anyone feels too much like leaving his squad at the river.

Background
Branik Vorel grew up in a border garrison where tieflings were tolerated so long as they were useful and quiet. He became useful early. He carried messages, learned to read supply tallies, and discovered that a steady rhythm could keep frightened recruits moving through rain, mud, and artillery smoke. By the time he was old enough to enlist, he had already learned three marching songs, two campfire languages, and the exact pitch that made a room full of exhausted soldiers listen. His company was ordered to hold a river crossing long after the commander's promised relief failed to arrive. Branik survived by turning orders into songs, using cadence to coordinate a retreat that saved most of the unit. The brass whistle at his throat belonged to a squadmate who did not make it back. Branik left the army afterward, not from shame, but because he could no longer pretend that obedience and duty were the same thing. Now he travels as a bard, carrying news, songs, and favors between people who have been abandoned by their rulers. He still thinks like a soldier, but he chooses his causes one person at a time.
