Appearance
A lean shark-man with slate gray skin, a white belly scarred by old hunger, and ragged fins frayed like torn cloaks. He keeps his clothes patched with copper wire and bright scraps of canvas, as if he can already imagine them sold to a better patron. His teeth are neatly filed and always visible in a hungry grin, and a tarnished coin hangs on a cord at his throat like a holy relic.
Mannerisms
He rubs his thumb over the hidden coin whenever he is thinking, counting, or tempted. When speaking about an object he wants to sell, he taps out imaginary measurements on the nearest surface, as if pricing the world by touch.
Personality
Rask is sharp-eyed, acquisitive, and relentlessly curious about how things are made and how they might be improved. He speaks like a haggling street merchant even when discussing danger, and he treats almost every problem as something that can be dismantled, priced, and reassembled for profit. Beneath that greed is a hard-earned caution, and beneath the caution a small, stubborn hope that he can remake himself as completely as he remakes his wares.
Ideals
Wealth is safety, and safety is freedom. If Rask can master creation, he can buy himself a life no hungry night can take away.
Bonds
He keeps the strange coin hidden in a stitched pocket over his heart and will risk almost anything to protect it, because he believes it is the first real treasure he has ever owned. He also feels a fierce, possessive loyalty to any street child or desperate waif he sees trying to survive as he once did, especially if they remind him of his own hunger.
Flaws
Rask cannot ignore the chance to turn a profit, even when prudence would be wiser. He lies smoothly when money is involved, then tells himself it is only business. If someone offers him a secret, he wants to own it, and if someone seems richer than him, he resents them before he even knows their name.
Quirks
Background
Rask Miretooth was born in the underbelly of a rain-choked settlement in Ravenloft, where the alleys smelled of rot, iron, and old fear. He was small even by the standards of his own kind, too hungry to be proud and too proud to beg cleanly. He learned to survive by turning scraps into trinkets, broken hooks into charms, and discarded bottle-glass into lucky charms for folk who wanted bad luck to go away. He sold anything that could be held in a hand, and anything that could not be held, he sold as a promise. One night, when the fog was so thick it seemed alive, a cloaked figure found him shivering beside a gutter fire and pressed a coin into his palm. The coin was warm, inscribed with impossible angles and a sigil that seemed to rearrange itself whenever he tried to focus on it. When Rask swallowed it by accident, because he had been thinking more about whether coins could be eaten than whether they should, knowledge crashed through him like a flood. Schematics, formulas, callouts for glass, steel, acid, and a hundred clever ways to make something worth more than its parts. He woke speaking the language of creation, and the first thing he felt, beyond awe, was greed. If knowledge could be bought, then knowledge could be sold, and if knowledge could be sold, then he could become rich enough to never be hungry again.
“He was small even by the standards of his own kind, too hungry to be proud and too proud to beg cleanly.”
