Appearance
Star is a lean tiefling with deep crimson skin, swept-back black horns, a narrow face, and pale gold eyes that glow faintly when their patron's power stirs. Their long tail is wrapped with faded blue cord and tiny metal charms collected from villages they have helped. Star wears weathered leather armor beneath a dark travel coat, carries a blackened grimoire chained to their belt, and bears a jagged scar across the left palm in the shape of a burning star.
Mannerisms
Star taps two fingers against their scarred palm whenever they hear a promise. They tilt their head toward empty corners as if listening to someone standing there, and they smile too brightly when discussing danger.
Personality
Star is bright, irreverent, and fiercely protective of ordinary people. They treat danger as an inconvenience and authority as a challenge. Beneath the swagger is a constant fear that the curse is shaping their choices, so Star deliberately makes unpredictable decisions to preserve a sense of free will. They are generous with food, suspicious of compliments, and surprisingly gentle with frightened animals.
Ideals
Freedom. No power, god, devil, or village has the right to decide what a person becomes. Star will break any chain, even if the chain is tied to their own soul.
Bonds
The valley that raised Star is their true home, and they will risk everything to protect its people. Star also keeps a scorched wooden toy from a child they saved during the fever outbreak, believing the child's survival proves the curse has not won.
Flaws
Star is terrified that every act of kindness is secretly another step toward fulfilling the patron's design. They distrust priests, authority figures, and anyone who offers help without asking for payment. When cornered, Star becomes reckless and may accept dangerous bargains simply to avoid admitting fear.
Quirks
Background
Star was born during a red meteor shower, an omen that frightened the farming village where their tiefling parents lived. From childhood, villagers whispered that the strange mark on Star's palm was a curse. When a fever swept through the valley, Star alone survived after hearing a voice from beyond the flames promising protection in exchange for a future favor. The fever ended, but the voice remained, and Star's shadow sometimes moved a heartbeat later than they did. Years later, a corrupt landholder tried to seize the village wells. Star rallied the farmers, sabotaged the estate's grain stores, and faced the landholder's hired enforcers with newly awakened eldritch power. The villagers called Star a hero, but Star knows the victory was purchased with the first true bargain of the curse. Now they wander as a Folk Hero and reluctant warlock, seeking a way to break the pact before the unseen patron collects its promised price. Star helps the powerless whenever possible, partly from genuine compassion and partly to prove that a cursed person can still choose what they become.
