His black hair is kept in short, practical cords bound with strips of red cloth, and his heavy hands are callused from shield drills, wagon repair, and years of hauling wounded soldiers from battlefields. He wears battered chain mail over a sleeveless wool tunic, keeps a red military sash tied around his waist, and constantly checks the knot with his thumb without seeming to notice. His expression is usually calm and attentive, but his posture becomes immense and immovable when someone smaller is threatened.

Kagati is patient, observant, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people and animals. He speaks in short, practical sentences, prefers useful work to ceremony, and treats promises as physical burdens that must be carried until fulfilled. He has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when everyone else is too tired to laugh.

Kagati grew up among the high crags where his clan measured adulthood by what a person could carry without complaint. He was never the strongest of his generation, and the elders noticed that early.
