Appearance
Rujierd is a broad-shouldered male goliath standing just over seven feet tall, with slate-gray skin marked by pale, natural birth-patterns resembling cracks in river stone. His dark hair is braided with small strips of parchment, each bearing a remembered quotation or prayer. He wears a chain shirt beneath layered blue-gray robes, carries a round shield painted with a silver open eye, and keeps his calligrapher’s supplies arranged with almost military precision. His voice is deep and resonant, but he speaks slowly and softly, forcing listeners to lean closer. When frightened or angry, his breathing becomes audibly measured, like someone reciting a litany between each breath. His large hands are ink-stained at the fingertips and hardened across the palms from years of carrying books, stone tablets, and temple supplies.
Mannerisms
He pauses before answering difficult questions and takes one deliberate breath for every important word. He often rests one broad hand on the nearest book, stone, or person’s shoulder while speaking, as though confirming that it is real. When correcting someone, he first quotes their statement back in a gentler form, then offers the correction as if adding a footnote rather than winning an argument.
Personality
Rujierd is patient, observant, and quietly warm. He remembers names, handwriting styles, preferred foods, and small acts of kindness with remarkable accuracy. He enjoys explaining obscure subjects to anyone who asks, but he is not condescending unless someone is deliberately cruel or careless. He prefers practical mercy over grand declarations, believing that a repaired roof, a recorded name, or a safely guided traveler can be as sacred as a miracle.
Ideals
Knowledge must serve the living. A truth locked away in a vault is less valuable than a truth used to protect someone who has no power of their own.
Bonds
He carries a weatherproof book containing the names of everyone lost in the mountain landslide, and he will risk himself to recover any missing name or surviving record. He remains devoted to the monastery archivist who gave him a life beyond the expectations of his clan.
Flaws
Rujierd treats ignorance as a problem to be corrected, even when kindness or silence would serve better. He is slow to trust anyone who destroys books, breaks promises, or dismisses the dead as irrelevant. Under pressure, he can become so focused on preserving a record or proving a point that he overlooks the immediate emotional needs of the people around him.
Quirks
Background
Rujierd was raised among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, memory, and usefulness to the whole. While his cousins competed in feats of strength, Rujierd discovered that old stone markers and weatherworn prayer tablets contained histories no living elder could fully recall. A traveling archivist noticed his patience and brought him to a monastery library, where he spent years hauling manuscripts, repairing bindings, copying damaged texts, and learning the sacred traditions of several distant peoples. The work gave him a reverence for knowledge, but the monastery also taught him that wisdom without compassion becomes another kind of pride. His calling as a cleric began when a landslide buried a mountain village and destroyed its shrine. Rujierd helped dig survivors from the rubble, then heard what he believed was a divine summons beneath the grinding stone, not a command to avenge the dead, but an instruction to preserve the names of those who had been lost. Since then, he has traveled as a scholar-priest, recording forgotten histories, protecting vulnerable communities, and seeking the source of a recurring phrase that appears in ancient texts from unrelated civilizations. He adventures because every ruin may hold a warning that could save lives, and because he refuses to let the forgotten become invisible a second time.
“The work gave him a reverence for knowledge, but the monastery also taught him that wisdom without compassion becomes another kind of pride.”
