Appearance
Dave From Home is a broad-shouldered, heavily scarred Aasimar with ash-gray skin, pale silver eyes, and close-cropped black hair streaked with white. His face is severe and difficult to read, with a broken nose and a long scar running from his left temple to his jaw. He wears battered chain mail beneath a dark tabard marked with a simple white hand, the symbol of protection stripped of any association with a particular church. His shield is covered in old axe scars, and his holy symbol hangs from a length of iron chain around his neck.
Mannerisms
Dave speaks quietly, forcing people to listen rather than raising his voice. He rarely makes threats. Instead, he calmly explains what will happen next, as if describing the weather. He maintains unbroken eye contact when questioned, cleans his shield before cleaning his sword, and pauses before answering any question about his family. In battle, he gives enemies one clear command to surrender, then acts without anger when they refuse.
Personality
Quiet, intimidating, and brutally practical. Dave does not enjoy cruelty, but he has accepted violence as a tool that must sometimes be used by someone willing to use it. He is patient with frightened people, respectful toward honest workers, and merciless toward those who exploit the weak. Pain does not frighten him. Death does not frighten him. Monsters do not frighten him. What frightens him is allowing evil to walk away when he had the power to stop it.
Ideals
Protect the innocent. Never abandon someone who cannot defend themselves. Never forgive deliberate predators. Keep your word. If mercy will only create another victim, mercy is not kindness.
Bonds
The memory of my wife and children is the closest thing I have to a sacred relic. I will not allow their deaths, or the deaths of anyone like them, to become an inconvenient story forgotten by people with power.
Flaws
I mistake mercy for weakness whenever someone has deliberately preyed on the helpless. Once I decide that a person is dangerous, I stop seeing the possibility that they can change. I also have no idea how to live for myself, and may be using justice as an excuse to keep moving so I never have to grieve.
Quirks
Background
Dave From Home was raised in a small village where people treated his Aasimar blood as a sign from the heavens. They believed he had been sent to guard them, and Dave accepted that responsibility without complaint. He served as the village protector, shrine attendant, and quiet final answer to threats that ordinary people could not face. He married, raised two sons and a daughter, and believed that a life spent keeping danger away from his family and neighbors was enough of a calling. One night, raiders descended on the village in search of something buried beneath it long before Dave was born. When the villagers refused to reveal its location, the raiders began slaughtering them. Dave fought until the streets were slick with blood, killing several attackers and driving away the survivors, but he could not save his wife or children. The raider captain escaped. Dave hunted him for years, eventually discovering that the man had joined a powerful leader's private army and was protected by corrupt officials. Dave presented evidence of the massacre, but the authorities accepted bribes and buried the case. That was the moment he stopped believing that law and justice were the same thing. Dave swore a personal oath, though he has not yet reached the formal level of training required to become an Oath of Vengeance paladin. If the law cannot reach them, he will. He now wanders from settlement to settlement, hunting monsters, murderers, slavers, corrupt leaders, and anyone else who uses power to prey on the helpless. His celestial guide appears from time to time and urges him to show mercy. Dave has begun to wonder whether the being is truly divine, or merely something wearing a holy face. Either way, he intends to keep doing what he believes must be done.
“They believed he had been sent to guard them, and Dave accepted that responsibility without complaint.”
