Katek is a lean warforged built from dark ironwood, riveted bronze, and pale ceramic plates. His face is a smooth, expressionless mask with a narrow horizontal grille where a mouth would be, and two amber glass lenses set deep beneath a brow of overlapping metal plates. A faded blue scholar's sash is wrapped around his torso beneath his armor, its edge worn nearly white where his left hand repeatedly rubs it while thinking. His armor bears carefully etched lines of notation, copied from old battlefield diagrams and astronomical charts. A small brass counter, once used by his creator to track artillery drills, hangs from his belt and clicks softly when he walks.

Quietly observant and intensely courteous, Katek listens as though every conversation might contain a lost piece of history. He prefers clear plans, written agreements, and questions with defined answers, but he is not humorless. His dry comments arrive without any change in expression, often several seconds after everyone else has noticed the absurdity of a situation. He is fascinated by unguarded acts of kindness because they cannot be easily explained by orders, doctrine, or material advantage.

Katek was activated in a workshop that built warforged for siege logistics rather than glory. His assigned purpose was to observe, record, and improve the movement of troops, supplies, and wounded soldiers. During the final months of the war, he spent more time in command tents than on the front line, copying maps and listening to officers argue over numbers that concealed the cost paid by ordinary people. When the war ended, the workshop emptied. The craftsmen departed, the officers stopped answering letters, and Katek was left with crates of unfinished records and no orders to follow. He became a self-appointed custodian of those records, carrying fragments of military history from town to town and trading his knowledge for lodging, repairs, or access to libraries. His studies gradually widened beyond tactics into languages, astronomy, medicine, and the question of what a constructed person is meant to become after the purpose of their construction has ended. He took up a fighter's discipline because the body he was given is still a weapon, whether he wishes it or not. Now he travels as a quiet researcher and occasional guard, looking for the missing final volume of his maker's field journal, which may contain the original instructions that shaped his mind.
