Appearance
Mkirchtu is a lean, long-limbed elf with dark brown skin, tightly curled black hair cut close at the sides, and amber-brown eyes that rarely stay fixed on one person for long. He wears a well-maintained but heavily patched suit of leather armor beneath a faded gray-green cloak. He smells faintly of lamp oil, dust, and crushed mint, a scent he is completely unaware of. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice his unusual way of moving, he keeps his shoulders loose and his steps nearly silent, but favors his left side when standing still, as if always leaving room for someone to pass behind him.
Mannerisms
He stands slightly angled to everyone else, habitually keeping his left side open and his back near an exit. When listening, he taps two fingers against his thumb in a slow rhythm. He rarely says goodbye, preferring to leave while a conversation still feels unfinished.
Personality
Mkirchtu is observant, irreverent, and difficult to impress. He treats danger as a puzzle and conversation as a contest of concealed motives. He has a soft spot for hungry children, injured animals, and anyone trying to leave a bad situation without making a speech about it. He dislikes grand promises, prefers immediate practical help, and laughs quietly at the worst possible moments.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should own another person's choices, name, labor, or future. Laws that protect power instead of people deserve to be bent or broken.
Bonds
The children of the river tunnels are his family. He sends them coins, medicine, and information whenever he can, and he will risk far too much to protect them.
Flaws
He assumes every offer has a hidden price and often ruins useful alliances by testing people instead of trusting them. When frightened, he becomes calculating and cold, even toward those who need reassurance.
Quirks
Background
Mkirchtu was raised in the service tunnels beneath a crowded river city, where abandoned cisterns, market foundations, and forgotten shrines formed a second world below the streets. His mother disappeared during a winter fever, and his father was never more than a name whispered by other beggars. The older urchins taught him which bells meant a guard patrol, which bakers left unsold loaves near the rear door, and which wealthy households cared more about embarrassment than theft. Mkirchtu learned to survive by carrying messages, lifting keys, and slipping through spaces no adult thought worth guarding. His elven heritage made him useful and suspect in equal measure. Humans underestimated his patience, while other elves looked through him as though the city had stained him beyond recognition. He eventually joined a small ring of street thieves, where his quiet hands and talent for noticing patterns made him an excellent scout. He left after discovering that the ring planned to sell several homeless children to a criminal gang. Mkirchtu stole their ledgers, freed the children, and vanished before dawn. Now he travels as a rogue, taking work that keeps him fed and free, while secretly searching for the people who financed the trafficking operation. He tells himself that revenge is only a practical form of accounting.
