Appearance
Fennic is a lean, broad-shouldered human man with sun-bright blonde hair, expressive blue eyes, and a broad, disarming smile. His clothes are colorful but travel-worn, with a patched green cloak, sturdy boots, and a scar crossing one eyebrow. A well-loved lute hangs at his side, while a battered prison key is worn as a pendant beneath his shirt. His hands are calloused from hard labor, sword practice, and years of playing music.
Mannerisms
Fennic grins before delivering bad news, taps rhythms against his thigh when nervous, and unconsciously counts doors, windows, and exits whenever he enters a room. When someone mentions magic trials, his smile goes still for half a heartbeat before returning brighter than before.
Personality
Fennic is warm, quick-witted, and impossible to keep quiet for long. He treats strangers like friends until they prove otherwise, champions underdogs without hesitation, and uses humor to make frightened people feel brave. Beneath his easy charm is a watchful survivor who notices every locked door, raised voice, and sudden movement.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be forced to kneel, perform, or fight for the amusement of the powerful. Every person deserves the chance to choose their own song.
Bonds
Dirinor saved his life, and Fennic will risk anything to repay that debt. He also carries the names of the prisoners who died in the Trials of the Magi, determined that their lives will not be forgotten.
Flaws
Fennic hides fear behind jokes and reckless confidence. He cannot resist defying bullies, even when caution would save lives, and he is haunted by the suspicion that some part of him enjoyed surviving the Trials of the Magi.
Quirks
Background
Fennic was born in a small farming village where every celebration ended with him standing on a table, singing too loudly and playing his lute too quickly. His golden heart made him beloved, but his restless curiosity often carried him beyond the safe roads. He learned to turn a joke into a distraction, a song into a signal, and a friendly smile into an invitation. When Baroness Ytrix the Invincible began squeezing the surrounding villages for taxes and conscripts, Fennic joined his clever friend Dirinor in a desperate attempt to steal records proving the baroness's crimes. The heist failed three years ago. Fennic was captured and imprisoned, where Ytrix forced him to serve as a proctor for the cruel Trials of the Magi. Over a dozen would-be wizards were thrown into lethal contests, and Fennic was made to fight alongside them simply to survive. He refuses to describe the trials in detail, but some nights he wakes with spell names on his lips and the taste of ash in his mouth. A few months ago, Dirinor broke him out. Fennic returned to the roads with his lute, his smile, and a fierce determination to make sure no tyrant ever turns frightened people into entertainment again. He acts as though he has escaped, but part of him is still listening for the bells that announced another trial.
“His golden heart made him beloved, but his restless curiosity often carried him beyond the safe roads.”
