Appearance
Naveena is a small forest gnome with warm brown skin, thick dark curls threaded with pale seed pods, and bright hazel eyes that seem perpetually attentive to movement in the undergrowth. Her hands are stained green-brown from sap, soil, and crushed leaves, while her weathered cloak smells of rain, fennel, and woodsmoke. She wears practical leather armor beneath layered moss-green clothing, and carries a polished wooden shield painted with a spiral of unfurling roots. Her boots are permanently damp, no matter the weather.
Mannerisms
Naveena pauses before answering questions, as if waiting to hear what the nearest plant thinks. She taps her shield twice before entering unfamiliar ground and absentmindedly checks the moisture of nearby soil with one fingertip.
Personality
Naveena is warm, observant, and cheerfully unsettling. She treats mushrooms as colleagues, considers abandoned places socially awkward rather than frightening, and asks direct questions that most people would soften. She is patient with animals and children, but becomes brisk and intense when someone dismisses a warning from the natural world.
Ideals
Renewal. Nothing is truly wasted in nature, but transformation must be guided rather than worshiped. Life deserves the chance to return in a healthier form.
Bonds
The cedar grove that sheltered her is dying, and Naveena has sworn to restore it before she allows herself to return home. She also keeps a small clay jar of living soil from her first garden, believing it contains the memory of her family.
Flaws
Naveena assumes every unexplained problem is connected to the blight, and she can become dangerously single-minded when evidence seems to support her theory. She is also reluctant to destroy anything that might be studied, including hostile fungi, cursed plants, and occasionally very angry monsters.
Quirks
Background
Naveena grew up among the root-cellars and orchard terraces of a forest gnome settlement, where every household kept a private little garden and every garden had a name. She was expected to become a maker of clever clocks or protective charms, but she became fascinated by the quiet negotiations between fungus, root, insect, and stone. Rather than treating decay as an enemy, Naveena learned to listen to it. She eventually left home after discovering that a familiar gray mold was appearing in places where no mold should grow, always near abandoned shrines and old battlefield soil. She spent seven years in a hollow beneath a fallen cedar, living as a hermit and recording the blight's movements. Her solitude ended when a wounded badger led her to a dying grove, where the trees whispered a warning in a language she could not understand. Naveena emerged from the forest with a half-finished cure, a satchel of samples, and the conviction that the sickness is being cultivated by someone who believes rot is a form of salvation. She now travels as a druidic investigator, looking for the missing ingredient and for the person teaching the land to hunger.
