Appearance
Aurther is a man in his early forties with graying temples and a face etched with the lines of many campaigns. He wears high-quality but scuffed plate armor, adorned with the faded heraldry of a forgotten unit. His eyes are a hard, piercing blue, and he carries himself with a rigid, military posture.
Mannerisms
He often cleans under his fingernails with a small dagger when he is bored or waiting for a conversation to end. He speaks in short, declarative sentences.
Personality
Aurther is a man of few words and strict routine. He is cynical about the motivations of politicians and lords, but fiercely loyal to the person standing next to him in a fight. He prefers the simplicity of a march and a clear objective to the nuances of courtly intrigue.
Ideals
Responsibility. I do what I must and obey just authority, but I will never follow a foolish command again.
Bonds
My honor is my life. I carry the names of my fallen squad with me, and I will die before I let their legacy be forgotten.
Flaws
I am deeply suspicious of anyone who claims to lead for the greater good. I assume most officers are incompetent until they prove otherwise.
Quirks
Background
Aurther Brand spent twenty years as a career soldier in the Iron Peak Infantry. He rose through the ranks by surviving when others did not, eventually leading a vanguard squad known for their unbreakable line. That life ended when his unit was assigned to hold a mountain pass against a draconic threat, a tactical blunder by a noble commander that led to the total destruction of his squad. Aurther was the sole survivor, dragged from the rubble by passing travelers. Now, Aurther finds himself a man without a country or a command. He wanders the lands taking contracts that align with his personal code of honor. He avoids leadership roles but naturally falls into them when chaos erupts. His sword is for hire, but his conscience is not, making him a complicated figure for those who wish to use him for dishonorable ends. His primary goal is to find meaning in his survival. He keeps his squad's roster on a piece of parchment in his breastplate, reading it every morning before he dons his armor. He believes that as long as he lives and fights correctly, the memory of those men remains untainted.
