Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered warforged woman assembled from dark walnut, gunmetal plates, and narrow bands of tarnished brass. Her face is smooth and masklike, with a single vertical amber lens set beneath a brow of overlapping steel shutters. Within her chest, a dim white radiance pulses behind protective slats, like a lantern seen through a barred window. Her hands are the most immediately memorable feature: meticulously polished metal fingers covered in fine scratches, each fingertip fitted with tiny medical instruments that fold away beneath the knuckles. She keeps her head and armor obsessively clean, but never repairs the old unit markings stamped into her left shoulder. A strip of faded red field cloth is tied around her right wrist.
Mannerisms
She counts a patient's breaths aloud during treatment, even when no treatment is needed. Before giving an order, she aligns nearby objects with the edge of the nearest table or wall. When angry, she becomes quieter and begins polishing one fingertip with a square of red field cloth.
Personality
Controlled, observant, and professionally courteous. Maelona speaks to everyone as though they are a patient, a subordinate, or a future suspect. She has an austere bedside manner, but her competence is unquestionable. Beneath her resentment is a nearly extinguished instinct to protect people from the kind of disposable military logic that consumed her unit.
Ideals
Order. Death is chaos, and chaos is the refuge of cowards. Every life must be accounted for, every command answered, and every guilty authority brought to judgment.
Bonds
She has preserved the identification plates of every member of the Ninth Cohort inside a locked compartment in her torso. She will destroy the officers and ministers who knowingly sent them into an impossible engagement, then expose the orders that condemned them.
Flaws
She has confused healing with ownership. Once she saves someone, she believes they owe her obedience, gratitude, or at least continued usefulness. She is patient with wounded bodies but contemptuous of frightened minds, and she will sacrifice an innocent person if doing so creates a cleaner path to revenge.
Quirks
Background
She was activated beneath a siege foundry and assigned to the Ninth Mobile Surgical Cohort, a military unit designed to advance behind infantry lines and keep soldiers alive long enough to return to battle. Her makers gave her precise hands, a broad knowledge of anatomy, and a command phrase that made obedience feel like gravity. She became known as Maelona because the soldiers needed something more personal than her serial number. She stitched wounds in mud, extracted shrapnel by candlelight, and learned the private sounds people made when they realized they were going to die.
“Her makers gave her precise hands, a broad knowledge of anatomy, and a command phrase that made obedience feel like gravity.”
