Appearance
Veyra Ashmantle is a tall, powerfully built hobgoblin woman with rust-red skin, sharp ears, a squared jaw, and pale gold eyes. Her lean abdomen and limbs are defined by impossible, disciplined musculature rather than bulk. She wears black studded leather armor, reinforced at the shoulders and ribs, with dark crimson cloth wrapped around her forearms. Two finely balanced longswords hang at her hips, and a black iron charm bearing an unfamiliar sigil rests beneath her collar. Her expression is controlled and watchful, but old battlefield scars mark her hands, throat, and left cheek.
Mannerisms
Veyra checks every doorway before entering, rolls her shoulders before combat, and taps the pommel of her left sword twice when making a difficult decision. She addresses allies by their military rank until they earn the privilege of being called by name.
Personality
Veyra is quiet, intensely observant, and relentlessly practical. She rarely raises her voice because she has learned that calm orders carry farther than shouted ones. Beneath her severe discipline is a fiercely protective woman who remembers every name, every debt, and every person who stood beside her when the banners burned.
Ideals
Discipline is not obedience. True strength is the choice to protect people when power gives you permission to abandon them.
Bonds
The survivors of her disgraced company are her family. She will cross kingdoms, defy rulers, and spend every coin she has to protect them or avenge those who were lost.
Flaws
She cannot forgive cowardice, especially her own. Veyra treats compromise as the first step toward betrayal, and when frightened or uncertain she becomes rigid, controlling, and dangerously willing to fight before she listens.
Quirks
Background
Veyra Ashmantle was raised in a hobgoblin war host that taught obedience before language and victory before mercy. She became a soldier young, first carrying messages through arrow storms, then serving as a duelist in the honor guard of a commander who believed discipline could make an army invincible. Veyra mastered two blades because one weapon was never enough for the work her commanders demanded. She learned to fight with economy, using every opening, every feint, and every heartbeat of hesitation. Her reputation grew until she was called the Ashmantle, because she always emerged from burning fortifications covered in gray ash and still standing. During a failed campaign, Veyra discovered that the war host had been sacrificing entire companies to conceal the ambitions of its generals. Refusing an order to abandon wounded soldiers, she led a retreat through enemy lines and broke the commander's standard across her knee. The act made her a traitor to the army, but a hero to the survivors. In the years that followed, she became a wandering mercenary and protector, taking contracts only from those who could name the people they intended to save. Somewhere during those campaigns, Veyra made a pact with an unseen power that answered her desperation with a blade of shadow and a promise that victory would always carry a price. She does not call herself a warlock. She calls herself a soldier who found another weapon.
