Action

  • Expert DivinationLevel 6

Peer can use an action to regain a spell slot of 2nd level or lower by touching his divination spellbook. The slot's level must be lower than the level of a spell he has cast since his last long rest. He can do this once per long rest.

  • ShapechangerChangeling troll variantAs an action, Peer can change his appearance and voice, including apparent height and weight, but not his game statistics. His clothing and equipment do not change. He can revert to his true form as an action or when he dies.

Always on

  • Arcane RecoveryLevel 1

Once per day after a short rest, Peer recovers spell slots with a combined level of up to 3, none of which can be 6th level or higher.

  • PortentLevel 2

Once before his next long rest, he can replace an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by him or a visible creature with one of these results. Each result can be used once.

  • Changeling InstinctsChangeling troll variantPeer gains proficiency in two skills of his choice, Deception and Insight.

Appearance

Peer stands unusually tall, with pale grey skin like weathered stone, a broad frame, pointed ears, sharp teeth, and silver-blue eyes. His blond hair is coarse rather than golden and grows quickly, so he keeps it cropped. He hides most of his body beneath a heavy wool cloak. A little wooden spoon hangs from his belt, worn smooth and dark at the bowl from years of rubbing it with his thumb. He smells faintly of damp earth, smoke, and whatever he most recently ate, a fact he tries not to notice.

Mannerisms

He rubs the bowl of his spoon with his thumb when lying or worrying, then catches himself and closes his fist around it. He pauses before making promises, as though listening for an answer no one else can hear.

Personality

Warm and charming when he feels safe, Peer is quick with a story and slow to volunteer for the unpleasant part of a task. He tries to make people laugh before they have time to stare at him. Under the charm is a watchful young man who notices every plate of food and every exit.

Ideals

A person is more than the worst thing they have done. Peer wants to believe that, but knows it must be proved through choices, not a heroic tale.

Bonds

His wife and unborn child are the home he hopes to earn his way back to. He also carries the wooden spoon his younger brother carved for him, though he cannot bring himself to ask what his brother thinks of him now.

Flaws

Peer turns to food, easy bargains, and flattering stories whenever fear or effort catches up with him. Troll hunger and sudden flashes of rage make him afraid he will become the monster the villagers already believe him to be.

Quirks

Keeps the wooden spoon his younger brother carved and rubs its worn bowl with his thumb.
Quietly counts the portions of food on a table before sitting down.
Makes small predictions about ordinary events, partly to test whether his Portent visions can be trusted.

Background

Peer Ludvik grew up in the northern country with his younger brother and two cousins, abandoned in the woods after his parents died. He was clever enough to find food and tools through bargains with trolls, and lazy enough to prefer a clever bargain over hard work. His family warned him that each trade left something behind. Peer heard them, then went back anyway. Later, stories spread that he had slain a troll king. Peer repeated the tale until even he believed it, and the locals made a hero of the handsome, golden-haired swordsman who could stab a monster and flick a spell into the bargain. His new life came with a rich wife, a comfortable home, and a child on the way. Then a witch he had bested cursed him. For weeks his temper and hunger grew strange, until he changed into what his bargains had made him: a troll changeling. The townsfolk drove him out, and Peer still fears for the wife and unborn child he left behind. Now his older cousin, a hard-edged berserker, insists the road is the best place to make a man of him. Peer has become a wandering Trollkarl, mixing scraps of learned magic with the practical tricks he picked up in the wild. He tells himself that gold and glory will let him return. He avoids thinking about whether his brother and other cousin would want him back.
