Appearance
Brindle Nib stands just over three feet tall, broad through the shoulders and sturdy in the belly, with warm brown skin, a square nose, and thick black hair cropped close except for a stubborn tuft at the crown. He keeps his beard in two short, carefully waxed forks, each tied with a copper bead. His clothes are practical and heavily mended, but every buckle and strap is polished. When waiting, he plants both feet wide and rests his hands on the pommel of his axe, rocking faintly from heel to toe as if bracing against an invisible storm.
Mannerisms
He taps his front teeth with one thumbnail while thinking, then abruptly points at the ground when he notices a track or change in the soil. Before entering a new place, he quietly names the nearest high ground, water source, and exit.
Personality
Brindle is cheerful, practical, and intensely attentive to small details. He treats every journey as a shared problem to solve, offering food, directions, or a repaired buckle before anyone has asked. He dislikes grand speeches but respects people who keep promises when no one is watching.
Ideals
The road teaches what books cannot. No one should be abandoned merely because the path to them is difficult.
Bonds
He carries a brass compass made by his missing aunt, and will risk almost anything to learn what happened to the expedition that disappeared in the high passes.
Flaws
He mistakes stubbornness for courage and becomes needlessly combative when someone suggests a safer plan. After a frenzy, he hides his exhaustion and insists he is fine until he nearly falls over.
Quirks
Background
Brindle Nib was raised among the stonecutters and gearwrights of a highland gnome settlement where every household kept a map, a repair bench, and a story about getting lost. He was expected to become a tinker like his aunt, but Brindle had a habit of wandering beyond the marked trails to test bridges, follow animal tracks, and sleep beneath open skies. He learned the hills by pressure underfoot and weather by smell, long before he learned to read the instruments he was meant to build. His life changed when a winter expedition vanished in the upper passes. Brindle found the survivors three days later, trapped beneath a collapsed shelf of stone. He could not lift the rock alone, so he raged, wedged his axe into a crack, and hauled until the passage opened enough for the injured to crawl through. Since then, he has treated his anger as a tool, dangerous when mishandled but honest when the work must be done. He now travels as a guide, scout, and occasional caravan guard, searching for the lost expedition's final campsite and trying to prove that a small frame can still carry a very large promise.
