Appearance
Kolby is a small, wiry kobold with rust-red scales, a pale cream muzzle, and large amber eyes that constantly dart toward possible dangers. He wears well-maintained chain mail sized and modified for his narrow frame, a polished shield bearing a simple sunburst, and a blue-gray cloak covered in careful hand stitching. His holy symbol is a tiny silver lantern tied around his neck. His sword is almost comically large for him, but he handles it with determined precision.
Mannerisms
Kolby frequently whispers tactical assessments to his shield, counts exits whenever he enters a room, and gives a nervous little bow before making requests. He polishes his holy symbol whenever he is worried and raises one clawed finger before speaking, as if reminding himself to be brave.
Personality
Anxious, polite, and intensely well meaning. Kolby is quick to apologize, eager to help, and prone to imagining several disastrous outcomes before taking even a simple action. Once someone is in danger, however, his fear becomes focused determination. He is surprisingly scholarly, enjoys explaining obscure religious details, and treats every successful rescue as proof that courage can be learned.
Ideals
Compassion. Strength exists to shelter those who do not have it. Nobody should be abandoned merely because they are small, frightened, strange, or inconvenient.
Bonds
The abandoned shrine that saved his life must be restored, and its sacred lantern must never be allowed to go dark. He is fiercely protective of anyone who reminds him of his old clutch.
Flaws
Kolby expects disaster at every moment and can mistake ordinary noises for signs of an ambush. When frightened, he may overprepare, stall, or blurt out inconvenient truths. He also secretly worries that his oath is only impressive because nobody has looked closely enough at how scared he really is.
Quirks
Background
Kolby was born beneath a ruined watchtower, in a kobold warren that survived by hiding from larger and stronger creatures. He was always anxious, always the first to hear a distant footstep and the last to stop imagining what might be waiting beyond the tunnel. During a winter of famine, Kolby fled into the wilderness after accidentally leading a band of predators away from his clutch. He expected to die alone, but instead found shelter in the abandoned shrine of a forgotten guardian deity. Years of solitude followed. Kolby repaired the shrine, studied its cracked inscriptions, and slowly came to believe that courage was not the absence of fear, but the decision to act while afraid. A traveling paladin eventually found him defending the shrine against grave robbers and recognized his devotion. Kolby was trained in the sacred oath of devotion, though he still trembles before battle and rehearses important speeches several times before giving them. Now he travels as a protector of the helpless, carrying his little silver lantern into places where even brave adventurers hesitate to go.
