Appearance
Vaneil is a lean, copper-skinned tiefling with swept-back obsidian horns, long dark hair threaded with silver cord, and amber eyes that seem to catch candlelight. He dresses in a weathered scholar's robe beneath light leather armor, with a black iron holy symbol at his throat and a polished arcane focus set into a brass reliquary. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he unconsciously checks the reliquary whenever a conversation turns dangerous. His normally measured voice becomes breathy and quiet when he is frightened, while his words grow unusually precise when he is angry.
Mannerisms
Vaneil speaks with careful diction and rarely interrupts. His fingers repeatedly check the clasp of his reliquary, especially when someone mentions demons, prophecy, or divine authority. When startled, he takes a shallow breath through his nose before answering in a whisper. When composing an argument, he silently counts its points on his knuckles.
Personality
Vaneil is scholarly, patient, and courteous even when surrounded by hostility. He approaches conversation like textual analysis, listening for omissions and contradictions. He is protective of frightened people and instinctively offers them a practical task, a prayer, or a carefully chosen fact to restore their sense of control.
Ideals
Knowledge is a sacred trust. Truth should be preserved and shared, especially when powerful people would prefer it forgotten.
Bonds
The temple that raised him is threatened by a hidden cabal seeking to erase a prophecy from its archives. Vaneil believes the prophecy is connected to the entity that answered his first desperate prayer. He has sworn to protect the temple's surviving texts and discover whether his patron is guiding him toward salvation or merely using him as a key.
Flaws
He is too willing to interpret danger as a meaningful sign from his patron. Vaneil can become condescending when others dismiss obscure knowledge, and he sometimes withholds troubling information until he believes he has found the perfect explanation.

Background
Vaneil Shaderunner was raised in the archive-vaults of a small temple devoted to the preservation of sacred texts. His tiefling blood made him a subject of suspicion among pilgrims, but the priests valued his extraordinary memory and relentless curiosity. He learned to repair damaged manuscripts, translate dead liturgical languages, and recite entire passages after a single reading. He became fascinated by the margins of forbidden scripture, especially references to voices that answered prayers from beyond the known heavens.
