Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, close-cropped black hair threaded with silver, and a neatly trimmed beard. His dark hazel eyes are alert and measured, framed by a narrow scar through his right eyebrow. He wears polished chain mail beneath a deep blue surcoat bearing the restrained gold device of his noble house. His shield is well maintained but visibly repaired, and his bearing remains formal even after years of campaigning.
Mannerisms
He straightens his cuffs before delivering a difficult truth, touches his signet ring when deciding whether to trust someone, and addresses servants, soldiers, and rulers with the same formal courtesy. When angry, his voice becomes quieter rather than louder.
Personality
Mardesh is deliberate, courteous, and quietly intense. He listens longer than most nobles expect and remembers names, debts, and small acts of kindness with unusual precision. He prefers negotiation to violence, but once he commits to protecting someone, he becomes immovable. He has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when exhausted or surrounded by people behaving foolishly.
Ideals
Justice must be practical. A law that protects the powerful while crushing the helpless has already betrayed its purpose. Mercy is not weakness, but mercy without accountability is only another form of neglect.
Bonds
He is bound to the villages along the old trade road, especially the families who survived the famine that changed his life. He also guards the reputation of his disgraced elder brother’s children, who know little of the crime but bear its consequences. His battered shield was given to him by the first caravan he protected as a sworn paladin, and he refuses to replace it.
Flaws
He can become rigid when challenged in public, especially if he believes someone is abusing authority. He is slow to forgive betrayal and sometimes mistakes his own certainty for moral clarity. Though he preaches humility, he still wants corrupt nobles to recognize that he was right, which makes him vulnerable to pride disguised as justice.
Quirks
Background
Mardesh Veyr was born into a minor human house whose estates bordered an old trade road, a place where merchants, pilgrims, soldiers, and thieves all passed beneath the same toll arch. His family taught him letters, law, heraldry, and the careful etiquette of people who owned more land than influence. Mardesh found the lessons useful, but he was never comfortable with the distance his station created. He spent more time speaking with caravan guards and village reeves than attending courtly entertainments, and he learned early that a noble name could open a door, but only personal courage could keep the people behind it safe. During a winter famine, his elder brother diverted grain shipments meant for three villages to preserve the family’s profits. Mardesh confronted him publicly, surrendered his claim to the family’s favored inheritance, and joined a temple order devoted to honorable service. There he became a paladin of devotion, not because he believes nobles are inherently virtuous, but because vows give virtue a shape that pride cannot easily imitate. Fifteen years of escorting refugees, exposing corrupt magistrates, and standing between frightened communities and armed men have made him a respected knight. He still carries his family signet, though he uses it less as a badge of rank than as a reminder that privilege is a debt, never a personal achievement.
