Appearance

Pik is a lean, medium-height aasimar man with warm brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and faintly luminous eyes that seem to catch reflections even in dim rooms. His celestial heritage appears most clearly when he invokes divine power, causing a soft gold radiance to gather around his shoulders and hands. He wears a slightly oversized chain shirt beneath a carefully brushed gray robe, with the robe's hem repeatedly repaired in neat, visible stitches. His wooden holy symbol is polished far more often than anything else he owns. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that he studies the exits, the ceiling, and the hands of everyone present before looking directly at their faces.

Mannerisms

Pik pauses before answering difficult questions and looks toward the nearest exit while thinking. He smooths the edge of his prayer book whenever someone lies, and counts his breaths under his breath before casting a healing spell.

Personality

Pik is observant, restrained, and unexpectedly dry-witted. He prefers useful conversation to pleasant conversation, but he remembers small details about people with almost unsettling accuracy. He offers practical help without ceremony, listens longer than most people expect, and rarely raises his voice. His calm is not serenity. It is a disciplined effort to keep every decision from becoming a personal crusade.

Ideals

Balance. Life and death, mercy and consequence, faith and doubt all have their place. The world does not need me to make it fair, only to keep my hands from tipping the scales for selfish reasons.

Bonds

The roadside sanctuary that raised him is in debt to a ruthless landowner, and Pik intends to repay what is owed before the temple is forced to close. He also carries the names of everyone who died during the fever, written in the back of his prayer book.

Flaws

Pik mistakes emotional distance for impartiality. He can watch someone suffer while he calculates the fairest response, then realize too late that compassion required choosing a side. He is also quietly vain about his religious knowledge and becomes pedantic when challenged in front of strangers.

Quirks

Keeps a written tally of favors received and repaid.
Names every healing herb before using it, even when alone.
Leaves a small portion of every meal untouched as an offering.
Turns his holy symbol face-down when he is uncertain whether a prayer has been answered.

Background

Pik was raised in a roadside sanctuary where travelers stopped to pray, barter news, and leave offerings for the dead. The temple was small enough that every duty belonged to everyone. He copied burial prayers, scrubbed soot from the shrine lamps, dressed wounds, and learned to recognize which visitors needed food, which needed silence, and which needed to be watched. The priests considered his celestial nature a blessing, but Pik treated it as an unanswered question. He could make holy light bloom in his palm, yet no divine voice ever told him what that light was meant to illuminate. When a fever swept through the surrounding villages, the sanctuary became a refuge. Pik worked until his hands cracked, carrying water, reading names from the death register, and using every scrap of divine magic he could command. The experience taught him that mercy was not the same as kindness, and that saving one person might require disappointing ten others. He left the temple with its old prayer book, a repaired chain shirt, and permission to seek the truth beyond familiar walls. Now he travels as a healer and observer, offering aid where it is useful, withholding judgment where it is not, and quietly searching for the force that placed celestial power in his blood.
