Appearance
A broad-shelled tortle with sea-green eyes, a weathered amber shell painted with faded constellations, and a neck often wrapped in ink-stained linen. Goffle dresses like a field scholar who has survived too many expeditions to stay formal for long, with a robe full of inner pockets, chalk dust on his claws, and a quarterstaff that doubles as both walking stick and pointer. When he grows excited, his shell seems to tilt as if listening.
Mannerisms
He taps the edge of his shell twice before making a difficult decision, as if consulting an invisible library. He speaks in calm, deliberate sentences, then suddenly speeds up when a magical idea delights him. He is fond of bowing to books before opening them.
Personality
Patient, inquisitive, and dryly humorous, Goffle treats every conversation like an excavation site, carefully brushing away nonsense until the useful truth appears. He is gentle with the weak, suspicious of pompous authority, and surprisingly bold when someone vulnerable needs help.
Ideals
Truth should be shared, not hoarded. Knowledge is a lantern, and if he has to break a few locked doors to carry that lantern into dark places, so be it.
Bonds
He still carries the shell-charm given to him by the archivist who taught him to read, and he will risk nearly anything to recover lost books, stolen histories, or a name erased from the record.
Flaws
He cannot resist correcting a falsehood, even when silence would be wiser, and he sometimes mistakes confidence in a theory for proof. When an argument turns heated, he gets stubbornly playful, which can make serious people think he is mocking them.
Quirks
Background
Goffle the Wise was hatched on a remote warm-shore island where tortles lived by tides, prayers, and the slow certainty of the sea. Unlike most of his kin, he was fascinated not by the next meal or the next current, but by the names carved into driftwood, the stars above the surf, and the half-rotted maps that washed ashore after storms. He spent his youth pestering passing sailors, monk-scribes, and retired adventurers until one elderly archivist in a port city took pity on him and taught him how to read, copy, and question the world with discipline. That discipline never quite cured his curiosity, it only gave it sharper claws. As a wizard, Goffle discovered that every mystery could be approached like a puzzle, if not solved, then at least shaken until something important fell out. He trained in the rigorous habits of spellcraft, but his chaotic good heart kept pulling him away from pure scholarship and toward messy acts of rescue, theft from cruel magistrates, and improvised magical heroics. He became known as the tortle who could quote ancient tomes, ignore authority with serene politeness, and then set a bully’s cloak on fire with a perfectly aimed burst of arcane force. He adventures now to recover lost lore, protect ordinary people from arrogant power, and prove that wisdom is not obedience, it is knowing when the rules deserve to be broken.
“That discipline never quite cured his curiosity, it only gave it sharper claws.”
