Appearance
Gengar is a one-foot-tall fairy lich with translucent, mothlike wings veined in dull silver. His skin is pale violet and faintly luminous around the joints, while a tiny blue flame burns inside the hollow of his chest. He wears a blackened clerical coat stitched from sailcloth, a belt of finger bones, and a miniature iron holy symbol shaped like a ship's bell. His eyes are two pinpricks of green corpse-light, and a cracked lower jaw is held together with copper wire. Despite his skeletal condition, he carries himself like a fussy ship's purser.
Mannerisms
Gengar taps his holy symbol three times before speaking about death. He pauses to straighten nearby bones, mutters shipboard prayers under his breath, and addresses skeletons as if they are former colleagues. When annoyed, he rings his tiny bell once.
Personality
Gengar is courteous, meticulous, and morbidly curious. He treats every conversation like an exchange of contracts, remembers favors with unsettling accuracy, and offers practical comfort rather than sentimental reassurance. Around the Bloodscale Omen's crew, he is protective in the manner of a small, irritable uncle who has already prepared everyone's burial arrangements.
Ideals
Death is a boundary, not a tyrant. The dead deserve dignity, the living deserve warning, and anyone who violates either deserves to be corrected.
Bonds
The Bloodscale Omen gave Gengar a place among the living when even the dead had grown tired of him. He will protect the ship and its crew until every member has reached the fate written beside their name in his ledger.
Flaws
Gengar cannot resist collecting something from every corpse he encounters, and he becomes irrationally offended when anyone disturbs a skeleton without first asking permission. He also keeps promises long after they have stopped making sense, especially promises made to the dead.
Quirks
Background
Gengar was born among the lantern groves of a secluded fairy court, where the dead were not buried so much as sung into the roots. He was always too interested in the practical details of dying. He recorded the names of drowned sailors, counted the teeth in battlefield skulls, and asked why some spirits lingered while others crossed cleanly. When a plague swept through the grove, Gengar tried to preserve his own life with a forbidden bargain. The bargain worked, technically. His body died, his soul was fastened to a tiny black reliquary, and his unpaid debt began whispering to him in the voices of the dead. He spent decades drifting between wrecks, crypts, and the Boneclaw Encampment, where he admired skeletal remains with the reverence other clerics reserved for saints. There, the power of the Death Domain answered him. Gengar learned that death was not merely an ending, but a boundary that could be guarded, exploited, or violated. He joined the crew of the Bloodscale Omen after reappearing in a tavern at the exact moment a brawl escalated, stepping out of a dead man's shadow with a ship's bell in one hand and a debt ledger in the other. Since then, he has served as the crew's death priest, undertaker, and irritatingly precise accountant of favors owed.
