Appearance
Moya Salt-Eye is a tall sea-weathered elf with storm-gray skin, dark teal hair braided with bits of shell and copper wire, and keen green eyes that constantly measure the horizon. Her scale mail is patched with leather and treated against saltwater, while a faded naval sash serves as a belt. She smells unmistakably of brine, tar, citrus peel, and the medicinal herbs packed into her healer's kit. Her hands are broad and callused from ropework, bow use, climbing wet rigging, and years of handling rough timber. She keeps her nails short, her gear meticulously oiled, and a small shark-tooth charm tied around her left wrist.
Mannerisms
Moya unconsciously sways as if standing on a deck, even on solid ground. Before answering a question, she glances toward the nearest exit or window. She addresses unfamiliar people as shipmates until they prove themselves untrustworthy, and she punctuates important instructions by tapping two fingers against her wrist, where her shark-tooth charm hangs.
Personality
Moya is blunt, observant, and fiercely protective. She speaks in the clipped rhythm of a deck officer, but softens immediately around frightened civilians, injured animals, and inexperienced sailors. She has a dry sense of humor, enjoys impossible wagers, and considers a person trustworthy if they share food without asking what it is worth.
Ideals
Freedom. No captain, crown, or commander owns another person's life. The sea belongs to everyone willing to respect it.
Bonds
The freed survivors of the vessel she helped escape are scattered across the coast. Moya sends part of every reward to find them and ensure they are safe. She also keeps the burned ship's brass compass as proof of the crime that made her abandon military service.
Flaws
Moya has little patience for hesitation and often treats a complicated problem as if it were a boarding action. She distrusts officers, nobles, and anyone who speaks too warmly about duty. When frightened, she becomes controlling, issuing orders instead of admitting fear. She also cannot resist taking dangerous chances to rescue strangers, especially children or sailors trapped at sea.
Quirks
Background
Moya Salt-Eye was born among a sea elf flotilla that followed warm currents between scattered islands. She learned the sea before she learned letters, reading reefs by their color, storms by their pressure, and ships by the way their wakes broke. When raiders began preying on fishing villages, Moya joined a coastal defense company as a scout and deck archer. She served as lookout, boarding fighter, and unwilling medic, discovering that the difference between a pirate and a soldier often came down to who had written the orders. She deserted after her commander ordered the burning of a captured vessel with civilians still aboard. Moya stole the ship's charts, freed the prisoners, and vanished into the night tide. Now she hunts slavers, wreckers, and predatory captains along the coast, taking contracts only from people who cannot afford protection. She still thinks like a soldier, still sleeps lightly, and still keeps formation when danger comes, but her loyalty belongs to the living people on the deck, not to any flag.
