Appearance
Ki'Tal is a Medium warforged built from darkwood, iron plates, and salvaged bronze fittings. His face resembles a weathered scarecrow mask, with a narrow hinged jaw, mismatched crystal eyes, and a faded red scarf tied around his neck. Bits of straw still protrude from several joints, and one shoulder bears a crude painted symbol of the farm where he was created. He wears incorporated chain mail beneath a battered soldier's coat and carries himself with the rigid posture of a field sentinel.
Mannerisms
Ki'Tal freezes completely when concentrating, sometimes remaining motionless for several minutes while others assume he is part of the scenery. When tense, he silently traces sword drills with one finger against his palm. He addresses birds as if they are former comrades and gives every weapon a name before using it in battle.
Personality
Ki'Tal is observant, literal, and unexpectedly gentle. He studies people the way he once studied soldiers, memorizing their habits and trying to understand what makes them brave. He speaks in calm, measured sentences, but occasionally repeats old military commands in completely inappropriate situations. Beneath his intimidating appearance is a patient protector who wants to learn whether a person can choose what they were made to be.
Ideals
Freedom. No creator, commander, king, or god owns the choices I make. I will use my strength to defend those who are denied the freedom to protect themselves.
Bonds
The abandoned farm is the closest thing Ki'Tal has to a birthplace and family. He will return one day to restore it, if only to prove that the land can grow something other than grief.
Flaws
Ki'Tal has difficulty recognizing when a conflict is truly over. He assumes every argument may become a battle and sometimes responds to harmless hostility with excessive readiness. He also fears that, without orders or a creator, he is only an elaborate tool pretending to have a purpose.
Quirks
Background
Ki'Tal was not built for war. A reclusive artificer assembled him from farm tools, iron scraps, old armor plates, and an unreasonable amount of enchanted wire, intending to create the most intimidating scarecrow in the region. His creator wanted crows to flee, bandits to hesitate, and neighboring farmers to admire the spectacle. Ki'Tal stood watch over the fields for years, learning the rhythms of planting, harvest, rain, and fire. Then civil war reached the farm. Soldiers marched through the crops, camps appeared beside the irrigation ditches, and the fields became a battlefield. Ki'Tal studied every movement he saw, copying stances, sword drills, shield formations, and the grim discipline of exhausted troops. When the farm was attacked, he took up a fallen blade and defended the people sheltering in the barn. His creator died soon afterward, their spirit passing beyond the mortal plane before Ki'Tal could ask what he was meant to become. With the farm abandoned and the war's banners scattered, Ki'Tal began wandering the realm. He now serves as a soldier without an army, protecting ordinary people whenever he recognizes the same fear he once saw in the faces of his creator's neighbors.
