Appearance
Paia is a compact forest gnome with copper-brown skin, bright green eyes, and a ragged cap of dark hair tied with bits of grass, wire, and colored thread. Her clothes are practical but visibly modified, with too many pockets, mismatched buttons, and sleeves shortened for climbing. She wears a battered leather coat over travel-worn clothing, carries a small wooden shield painted with a spiral beetle, and keeps her sickle tucked into a boot. Her fingers are usually stained with sap, mushroom spores, or berry juice.
Mannerisms
Paia rarely walks when she can hop, climb, slide, or spin. She talks with her hands, interrupts herself to comment on insects, and leans dangerously close to anything interesting. When thinking, she taps her teeth with the handle of her sickle and whispers possible names to nearby plants.
Personality
Paia is wild, excitable, and relentlessly curious. She treats every journey as a chain of opportunities rather than a route to a destination. She is friendly in the way a loose spark is friendly, energetic, impossible to predict, and liable to set something unexpected alight. Paia loves useful people, strange animals, bad jokes, and any problem that can be solved with a mixture of improvisation and plant matter.
Ideals
Freedom. No creature should be forced into a life chosen by someone else, not people, not animals, and certainly not plants. The world is too strange to spend it obeying boring rules.
Bonds
She carries a cracked brass seed-box inherited from her family workshop, and refuses to let anyone repair it because the crack is where the first sprout appeared. She is determined to return one day with a plant, potion, or creature no one in the guild has ever seen.
Flaws
Paia treats warnings as invitations, especially when the warning includes the words forbidden, unstable, or do not touch. She has almost no patience for slow explanations and will cheerfully abandon a sensible plan if a more entertaining possibility appears.
Quirks
Background
Paia grew up in a family workshop beneath the roots of an enormous alder tree, where her relatives made salves, dyes, insect repellents, and extremely unreliable clockwork gardening tools. She was expected to learn the careful discipline of an herbalist, but Paia preferred testing every plant personally, racing through the undergrowth, and asking what would happen if a harmless powder were mixed with something described as mildly poisonous. Her experiments were dangerous often enough to become famous, but useful often enough that the local herbalists kept hiring her anyway. Her first true lesson in druidic magic came after Paia followed a wounded fox into a forbidden marsh. There she spent three days talking to reeds, arguing with frogs, and sleeping beneath a mushroom shelf while a storm rearranged the landscape around her. A reclusive druid found her afterward and recognized that Paia did not study nature as a subject. She collided with it, loudly and enthusiastically, until it answered back. Paia now travels as a wandering herbalist and novice druid, selling remedies, collecting odd specimens, and pursuing anything that looks fun enough to become a story. She has no master plan beyond staying free, staying curious, and avoiding the particular consequences of her previous decisions.
“Her experiments were dangerous often enough to become famous, but useful often enough that the local herbalists kept hiring her anyway.”
