Appearance
Sensei is a lean, dark-green tortle with amber-brown eyes, a broad shell patterned like weathered river stones, and a deliberate, balanced way of moving. His shell is decorated with faded chalk marks that resemble city maps, though years of rubbing and rain have worn most of them away. He wears practical ranger leathers beneath a patched cloak, keeps a short knife tucked into a wrist sheath, and carries a tiny brass bell tied to his pack strap. The bell is visibly polished where his thumb repeatedly finds it, a habit he performs whenever he is thinking or uncertain.
Mannerisms
Sensei speaks softly and pauses before answering, as if checking the sounds around him first. He often angles his body toward the nearest exit, and he rubs the polished spot on his brass bell whenever he is worried or trying to remember something.
Personality
Quietly observant and patient, Sensei prefers to listen until he understands the shape of a problem. He is gentle with small creatures and wary of polished manners, believing that a person's treatment of the helpless reveals more than their words. Despite his reserved nature, he has a dry sense of humor and enjoys teaching practical tricks to anyone willing to learn.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be trapped by birth, poverty, walls, or the plans of the powerful. The safest path is the one that leaves a person able to choose their next step.
Bonds
The brass bell from his family's caravan is his most precious possession. He will risk himself to protect abandoned children, lost travelers, and anyone being hunted without allies.
Flaws
Sensei assumes that anyone with authority is hiding something, and he can become needlessly evasive when questioned about his past. He is also prone to taking responsibility for people who have not asked for his help, then resenting them when they refuse his protection.
Quirks
Background
Sensei hatched beneath a wharf in a city where the tide carried secrets through every alley and drain. His parents belonged to a traveling tortle caravan, but they disappeared during a season of dangerous storms, leaving him to survive among dockside children, stray animals, and the forgotten spaces beneath the streets. He learned which shopkeepers left food outside, which guards could be distracted, and which rooftops offered a safe view of the harbor. A tiny brass bell from his family caravan became his only keepsake, and he still rubs it with his thumb whenever he must choose between caution and compassion. As he grew older, Sensei began guiding lost children and fugitives through hidden routes beneath the city. His knowledge of tracks, weather, and animal behavior eventually drew the attention of a wandering ranger, who taught him how to read the wider world beyond the walls. Sensei now travels as a ranger, seeking signs of the caravan that vanished and protecting the overlooked creatures and people who remind him of his own beginnings. He calls himself Sensei half-jokingly, after the title children gave him when he began teaching them how to disappear safely into the city.
“He learned which shopkeepers left food outside, which guards could be distracted, and which rooftops offered a safe view of the harbor.”
