Appearance
Tolen is a slender, grey-skinned aasimar with softly luminous eyes and long black hair kept in an immaculate braid. His teeth are unusually small and even, but his lower canines are subtly elongated, visible whenever he smiles or tastes a potion. He dresses in layered charcoal robes beneath practical scale mail, with silver funeral bells sewn into his cuffs. His tools, vials, and handwritten labels are arranged with near-obsessive precision.
Mannerisms
Tolen speaks softly and pauses before answering, as though checking each word for contamination. He labels every vial aloud before opening it, taps his silver bell once when entering a room, and smiles with closed lips unless he is genuinely amused.
Personality
Tolen is patient, courteous, and disturbingly calm around death. He listens closely to people who are grieving, but he has little instinct for ordinary small talk. He is fascinated by mechanisms, embalming chemistry, and the precise instant when a magical effect ends.
Ideals
Mercy. Every soul deserves a clean passage, and every living person deserves the truth about what happened to their dead.
Bonds
The first corpse Tolen ever prepared belonged to the mentor who taught him the rites of passing. He carries her broken brass reliquary and intends to discover who corrupted it.
Flaws
Tolen cannot leave an improperly buried body alone, even when doing so would be safer. He also treats emotional uncertainty like a technical problem, and his attempts to fix grief often make grieving people feel examined rather than comforted.
Quirks
Background
Tolen was born beneath an eclipse in a city where the dead were carried through underground streets before burial. His celestial heritage manifested not as radiant glory, but as a quiet awareness of the boundary between breath and silence. He could feel when a soul had departed cleanly, when a corpse had been tampered with, and when something else was wearing the shape of the dead. The morticians who raised him treated this gift as a sacred responsibility rather than an omen. He became an artificer by building instruments for the work others found too frightening to improve. His first invention was a brass reliquary that chimed when necromantic energy lingered near a body. His second was a set of alchemical draughts designed to preserve flesh, purge corruption, or grant the living a few more moments of clarity. Tolen now travels as an itinerant keeper of last rites, searching for the hidden machinery behind unnatural deaths. He does not claim to be death itself. He simply believes that death has an underworld, and that someone must keep its doors from being forced open.
