Appearance
A broad-shelled male tortle with moss-green scales, amber eyes, and a heavy, weathered shell marked with faded astronomical diagrams. He wears layered scholar's robes adapted for his shell, a leather satchel filled with notes, and a blue scarf embroidered with tiny silver stars. His quarterstaff is capped with a polished piece of obsidian.
Mannerisms
Namaru pauses before answering difficult questions, tilts his head as though listening to distant waves, and traces imaginary constellations across his shell while thinking. When nervous, he taps his quarterstaff three times against the ground before speaking.
Personality
Namaru is patient, observant, and unfailingly polite. He speaks with the measured certainty of someone who prefers evidence to impulse, but his compassion is genuine and practical. He is fascinated by obscure traditions, forgotten ruins, and the small habits of unfamiliar cultures. Although he dislikes violence, he will place himself between danger and an innocent without hesitation.
Ideals
Knowledge should serve the vulnerable. The worth of a discovery is measured by how many lives it can protect, not by how prestigious it makes the discoverer.
Bonds
I will find my missing mentor and recover the astronomical records they vanished while studying.
Flaws
I can become so absorbed in solving a mystery that I overlook immediate dangers and the emotional needs of the people around me.
Quirks
Background
Namaru Shell-of-Stars was born on a warm coastal island where tortles measured their lives by tides, migrations, and the slow growth of coral reefs. While other young tortles practiced hunting and navigation, Namaru became fascinated by the patterns hidden in the night sky. He believed the stars were not merely lights, but pages in an immense celestial manuscript. A traveling human scholar noticed his memory and patience, then brought him to a distant academy where Namaru studied history, arcana, and the practical use of magic. Namaru never became a prodigy in the traditional sense. His intellect is steady rather than dazzling, and he compensates with careful observation, diligent note-taking, and an instinct for finding the right source. His studies changed when his mentor disappeared while investigating a ruined observatory said to contain records of a coming catastrophe. Namaru now travels as both a wizard and a researcher, helping people wherever he can while following fragments of his mentor's research. He hopes to recover the lost notes, understand the warning hidden within them, and ensure that knowledge meant to protect the innocent is never buried again.
