Appearance
Vezhka is a tall, broad-shouldered elf with a weathered, almost scholarly severity. Her dark silver hair is cut bluntly at the jaw and kept pinned back with a tarnished brass clasp. She wears layered charcoal robes beneath a badly fitted traveling coat, whose hems have been repaired with mismatched red thread. One possession receives absurd care, a crystal arcane focus wrapped in clean linen and suspended inside a small iron cage. Within a room, her eyes go first to exits, then to hands, then to books, never to faces. Fine slate-colored scales appear along her collarbones and forearms, and when her temper rises, a faint ember-red glow moves beneath them.
Mannerisms
She pauses before answering simple questions, as though consulting an invisible index. She cleans the crystal focus whenever someone lies to her. In conversation, she rarely looks at the speaker, instead watching their hands and the nearest exit. When casting, she pronounces the final syllable of every spell like a librarian stamping a returned book.
Personality
Vezhka is austere, observant, and unnervingly patient. She speaks with the measured courtesy of a tutor addressing a slow student, even while threatening someone. She has a genuine love of difficult books, elegant theories, and the moment when another person realizes they have been outmaneuvered. She is capable of loyalty, but only toward people who prove useful, intellectually honest, or sufficiently dangerous to remain interesting.
Ideals
Knowledge is not sacred. It is a lever. Whoever has the information to move the world has the right to decide where it falls.
Bonds
The iron-caged crystal focus contains the last surviving memory of the dragon whose magic entered her blood. She will destroy cities rather than let that memory be taken or examined by another scholar.
Flaws
She cannot leave an unanswered question alone, even when the answer is dangerous, irrelevant, or plainly none of her business. Vezhka assumes every kindness is a concealed bargain and often ruins useful alliances by exposing the bargain before it has been offered. When frightened, she becomes more precise, more polite, and far more likely to do something monstrous.
Quirks
Background
Vezhka was born in a remote elven archive where generations of custodians preserved fragments of vanished empires, forbidden genealogies, and half-burned spellbooks. She was not a gifted student in the usual sense. Her memory was uneven, her curiosity was cruelly selective, and she had little patience for ceremony. Yet when she touched a sealed draconic codex at the age of twenty-seven, the book split open and exhaled a living flame. The fire entered her lungs without burning them. From that day onward, magic answered her before she had decided what she wanted it to do. Her tutors first treated the phenomenon as a scholarly miracle. Vezhka treated it as a weapon. She spent decades studying dragon speech, extinct magical dialects, and the methods by which ancient tyrants used lore to control entire populations. When the archive’s council refused to let her test a mind-altering ritual on prisoners, she set the council chamber ablaze and escaped with the archive’s most dangerous index. Since then, she has wandered from court to battlefield, selling impossible answers to people desperate enough not to ask what the price will be. She believes knowledge is most valuable when it can be used to make someone helpless.
