Appearance
Fawkes is a compact lightfoot halfling with a sharp, foxlike face, sandy-brown hair, and restless gray eyes that constantly measure exits, pockets, and unattended valuables. He stands with his weight on the balls of his feet, as if every conversation might require a sudden sprint. He smells faintly of lamp oil, hot metal, and cinnamon, an aroma he insists is a deliberate disguise. His practical leather apron is covered in stitched pockets, brass clasps, colored wires, and tiny chalk marks. A soot-darkened set of goggles usually rests on his forehead.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Fawkes rocks subtly from heel to toe and keeps one hand hovering near his tool belt. He taps metal objects three times before using them, whispers calculations to his equipment, and smiles too broadly whenever someone says the words impossible or heavily guarded.
Personality
Fawkes is cheerful, theatrical, and relentlessly curious. He treats every conversation as a negotiation and every locked door as an invitation to demonstrate cleverness. He is sincerely fascinated by mechanisms, political hypocrisy, and the exact moment when a confident person realizes they have been deceived. Beneath the swagger, he has a genuine instinct to protect small communities from powerful people, although his methods often create fresh problems.
Ideals
Freedom. No throne, council, church, or House of Lords should possess enough power to make ordinary people afraid to speak. If authority cannot survive scrutiny, it deserves sabotage.
Bonds
He keeps one surviving brass detonator from the House of Lords operation and intends to finish the design someday, though he has not decided whether the final target should be a tyrant, a bank, or a particularly smug statue.
Flaws
Fawkes cannot resist improving a plan that is already working. He lies reflexively, even when the truth would be easier, and he becomes dangerously defensive when someone calls his inventions bombs instead of controlled structural persuasion devices.
Quirks
Background
Fawkes grew up among traveling halfling traders, where a quick smile was considered as useful as a full purse and every wagon had at least one hidden compartment. He learned early that people rarely inspect what they expect to be harmless. As a young adult, he turned that lesson toward engineering, combining tinker's tools, alchemical powders, and theatrical misdirection into devices that could open locks, fake magical signs, and make guards look in exactly the wrong direction. His favorite alias, Master Fawkes of the Royal Ordnance, began as a joke and became an exceptionally profitable fraud. The joke ended when Fawkes decided that the House of Lords was less a governing body than an overdecorated machine that needed dismantling. He crafted a chain of bombs intended to blow out the foundations beneath the Lords' ceremonial chamber during a public session. The devices were ingenious, compact, and almost entirely successful. Unfortunately, one lord had secretly replaced the chamber's floor with reinforced stone after an unrelated assassination attempt, and the resulting blast mostly destroyed a wine cellar, a portrait gallery, and Fawkes's carefully constructed reputation. He escaped disguised as a visiting pastry chef, leaving behind a smoking crater, several forged warrants, and a political scandal that still makes certain nobles nervous. Now Fawkes travels as an artificer, confidence trickster, and occasional revolutionary consultant. He claims the bombing was a moral statement, a technical demonstration, and a misunderstanding, depending on who is asking. He still carries the surviving components of his original design, hoping one day to discover whether the failure was caused by flawed mathematics, deliberate sabotage, or simply too much optimism.
