Features
9 featuresAction
- Divine SenseLevel 1
As an action, expend a use to open your awareness to detect celestials, fiends, and undead within 60 feet, unless behind total cover. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any such being that is not behind total cover and its type, but not its identity. You also sense any consecrated or desecrated place or object within the same radius. You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier, regaining all uses after a long rest.
- Lay on HandsLevel 1
You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you finish a long rest. As an action, touch a creature and restore any number of hit points from the pool, up to its remaining amount. The pool contains 5 hit points. Alternatively, expend 5 hit points from the pool to cure one disease or neutralize one poison affecting the target. This feature has no effect on undead or constructs.

Appearance
Gawain is broad-shouldered and heavily built, with warm brown skin weathered darker across his forehead and hands from years of riding exposed roads. His dark hair is kept close at the sides and tied back at the nape. Before he speaks, he draws a small, audible breath through his nose and holds it for a beat, as if weighing every word. His bearing is formal, but his chain mail is carefully maintained rather than decorative.
Mannerisms
Before answering, he takes a quiet breath through his nose and pauses. He addresses people by title until invited to do otherwise, and sets his shield down carefully rather than letting it clatter.
Personality
Measured, courteous, and difficult to provoke, Gawain prefers clear terms to charming ambiguity. He is attentive to people who are being ignored, though his concern often comes out as practical questions about food, shelter, or who is responsible.
Ideals
Duty. A promise is not a performance or a convenience. Those with power must keep their word even when doing so costs them status.
Bonds
He carries his family’s signet ring, not as a claim to command, but as a reminder that his name should open doors for people who cannot open them themselves. He intends to restore the neglected roadside shrine at the Ford of Kesh, where he first understood what his oath should mean.
Flaws
He can mistake obedience to a sound procedure for justice, and is slow to admit when a rule has harmed someone it was meant to protect. He also finds it difficult to ask for help without making the request sound like an order.
Quirks
Background
Gawain was raised in a half-elven noble household where the family’s old human customs and elven traditions rarely agreed. He learned to listen without showing impatience, to remember the exact phrasing of a promise, and to treat a formal obligation as more durable than affection. His family expected him to become a courtly negotiator. Instead, after seeing a dispute over a road toll leave an isolated hamlet without protection, he chose the paladin’s oath-bound life, believing that authority has value only when it accepts responsibility.
“His family expected him to become a courtly negotiator.”
