  • Hack and Slash

When When you attack an enemy in melee

When you attack an enemy in melee, roll+STR. On a 10+, you deal your damage to the enemy and avoid their attack. At your option, you may do +1d6 damage but expose yourself to the enemy's attack. On a 7-9, you deal your damage to the enemy and the enemy makes an attack against you.

  • Volley

When When you take aim and volley at a distant target

When you take aim and volley, roll+DEX. On a 10+, choose 3. On a 7-9, choose 2: you must take several shots, reduce your ammo by 1, expose yourself to danger, or deal -1d6 damage. You may choose to deal your damage to the target. On a 6-, the GM makes a move.

  • Defy Danger

When When you act despite an imminent threat or suffer a calamity

When you act despite an imminent threat or suffer a calamity, say how you deal with it and roll the relevant ability. On a 10+, you do what you set out to do and avoid the threat. On a 7-9, you stumble, hesitate, or flinch, and the GM will offer you a worse outcome, hard bargain, or ugly choice. On a 6-, the GM makes a move.

  • Defend

When When you stand in defense of a person, item, or location

When you stand in defense of a person, item, or location, roll+CON. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 1. While defending, you may spend hold to intercept an attack against the thing you defend, halve the attack's effect or damage, open the attacker to an ally, or deal damage to the attacker. On a 6-, the GM makes a move.

  • Spout Lore

When When you consult your accumulated knowledge about something

When you consult your accumulated knowledge about something, roll+INT. On a 10+, the GM will tell you something interesting and useful about the subject. On a 7-9, the GM will tell you something interesting, but it is up to you to make it useful. On a 6-, the GM makes a move.

  • Discern Realities

When When you closely study a situation or person

When you closely study a situation or person, roll+WIS. On a 10+, ask the GM 3 questions from the list. On a 7-9, ask 1. Take +1 forward when acting on the answers. Questions include: What happened here recently? What is about to happen? What should I be on the lookout for? What here is not what it appears to be? What is the true position of my enemy?

  • Parley

When When you have leverage on a GM character and manipulate them

When you have leverage on a GM character and manipulate them, roll+CHA. Leverage can be a promise, threat, or useful information. On a 10+, they do what you ask if they can. On a 7-9, they do it, but need assurance, concrete proof, or immediately applicable incentive. On a 6-, they make a move.

  • Divine Spellcasting

When When you invoke a prepared divine spell or portfolio prayer

You possess divine spellcasting and prepare miracles from the God spell list. Your powers are fueled by Charisma and divine authority rather than Dungeon World spell slots. You know three cantrips or portfolio prayers and can invoke prepared miracles when the fiction permits. Your preparation, casting, and consequences are handled as magical moves by the GM, not as D&D spell-slot accounting.

  • Portfolio: War

When When you publicly invoke your portfolio and call warriors to purpose

Choose a divine portfolio. Mars's portfolio is War. You gain the portfolio cantrip or skill equivalent 'Call to Battle': when you invoke the names of Rome and Mars before a battle, one ally who can hear you takes +1 forward to their first attack and gains courage against fear. Your portfolio also determines later divine features.

  • Divine Authority

When When you invoke a portfolio miracle, protective intervention, or Divine Rebuke

You can invoke your divinity a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest, currently 5 uses. Choose a War portfolio effect or use Divine Rebuke. Divine Rebuke adds your Charisma modifier to one damage roll, currently -1, and manifests as avenging flame, thunder, or force. In Dungeon World play, the GM may tie access to worship, descendants, shrines, and public belief.

  • Immortal Constitution

When When your divine nature protects you from bodily frailty

Your divine body resists mortal frailty. You gain proficiency in Constitution saving throws, and you no longer need food or drink, though you may consume them for pleasure or ceremony.

  • Standard of the Legions

When When you declare a battle objective and lead allies beneath your standard

You gain a War portfolio feature: when you lead an organized force into a declared battle, name the battle's objective. Until the objective is achieved or abandoned, allies who follow your orders take +1 forward when acting together toward it.

  • Radiant Dominion

When When your divine power strikes through cover or deals listed elemental damage

Your spells and Divine Authority effects can ignore half cover. When you deal radiant, necrotic, thunder, or lightning damage, you may change one damage type to another type from that list.

  • Unyielding Divinity

When When you fail a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on a spell

You can maintain concentration on a spell when you fail a Constitution saving throw by expending one use of Divine Authority and taking radiant damage equal to twice your God level, currently 28 radiant damage.

  • Divine Presence

When When your divine nature protects you from harm

Your divine presence reaches beyond the Mist. You gain resistance to radiant damage and resistance to one additional damage type associated with War, chosen here as weapon damage from nonmagical attacks.

  • Refuse Defeat

When When an ally within sight falls to 0 hit points

You gain a War portfolio feature: when you witness an ally within sight fall to 0 hit points, you may spend one use of Divine Authority to let that ally remain standing at 1 hit point and immediately choose whether they may make a single basic attack or move to safety.

  • Unveiled Form

When When you expend Divine Authority

Whenever you expend Divine Authority, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 10 minutes. During that time, your appearance becomes visibly supernatural, with burning eyes, a radiant battle aura, and a voice that carries like a trumpet.

  • Greater Dominion

When When a common environmental threat would afflict you

Your War portfolio grants immunity to one common environmental threat. Mars is immune to ordinary disease and the effects of extreme heat, including desert heat and mundane fire exposure.

  • Mark the Adversary

When When you enter a battlefield and identify the opposing champion

You gain a War portfolio feature: when you enter a battlefield, name one enemy commander or champion you can see. Until that foe is defeated, you cannot be surprised by their actions and allies who can see you take +1 forward to resist fear caused by that foe.

  • Divine Refusal

When When you fail a saving throw

Once per Long Rest, when you fail a saving throw, you can succeed instead. When you do, visible divine light erupts from you, and creatures of your choice within 10 feet take radiant damage equal to your God level, currently 14 damage.

  • Living Icon

When When you or a nearby ally faces death or supernatural fear

Your worship becomes a shield. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet gain a bonus to death saving throws and saving throws against being frightened equal to your Charisma modifier, minimum +1. Mars grants a minimum bonus of +1 despite his poor personal warmth.

  • Supreme Authority

When When battle begins while your Divine Authority is exhausted

When you roll Initiative and have no uses of Divine Authority remaining, you regain one use. In addition, your Divine Authority effects can target one additional creature within range.

  • Avenger's Echo

When When you use Divine Authority during a battle

You gain a War portfolio feature: when you spend Divine Authority to affect one creature, you may also grant a nearby ally +1 forward or deal 1d6 damage to a visible enemy affected by the same battle.

  • Sight Beyond the Mist

When When you perceive hidden truth or communicate across distance

Your divine senses pierce deception. You gain truesight out to 30 feet and can communicate telepathically with any creature that knows one of your names or titles within 120 feet.

  • Ability Score Improvement

When When your divine nature permanently strengthens your body

You gain one Ability Score Improvement. You increase Constitution from 13 to 15, raising its modifier from +1 to +1 under Dungeon World ability modifier rules.

  • Shield of Rome

When When you take damage while protecting an ally or declared objective

As a War portfolio feature, when you take damage while protecting an ally or objective, you may spend one use of Divine Authority to reduce the damage by your God level, currently 14, and make a free move toward the attacker.

  • TraitHumanAdaptable mortal form with exceptional potential for divine influence.
  • Human determinationHumanwhen a mortal ally chooses courage over retreat, Mars can recognize and strengthen that resolve.
  • Bearer of civilizationHumanMars can invoke Roman law, history, and ancestry as potent social leverage where those traditions are known.

Appearance

He wears ceremonial Roman armor of blackened silver over a tunic the color of freshly spilled blood. A crimson cloak hangs from his shoulders, and his presence carries the weight of a conquering standard.

Mannerisms

Mars stands as if before an army, never slouches, addresses mortals by rank or usefulness, and touches two fingers to his breastplate before making a vow. When angered, the flames in his eyes become brighter and the air smells faintly of iron and ash.

Personality

Imperious, disciplined, and intensely purposeful. Mars speaks with the certainty of a commander issuing orders, yet he can show genuine respect toward courage, loyalty, sacrifice, and battlefield competence. He believes glory is earned through righteous struggle, not random slaughter, and considers every conflict a test of civilization's worth.

Ideals

Glory

Bonds

____ has shown courage when retreat would have been easier, and Mars has marked them as worthy of Rome's protection. Mars suspects that ____ carries a bloodline or destiny that could strengthen the Roman restoration, and intends to secure their loyalty before another power claims them. Mars will not abandon the party while ____ still stands against impossible odds.

Flaws

Mars confuses conquest with justice and believes his own propaganda because it has been repeated for ages. He is contemptuous of compromise, forgiveness, and anyone who refuses a glorious risk. His hatred of Ares can make him reckless, and his desire to control Perseus may turn allies into possessions.

Quirks

Corrects anyone who calls him Ares.
Keeps a private tally of acts of courage witnessed each day.
Places a laurel wreath on the fallen, friend or enemy.
Refers to Perseus as 'my descendant' even when no explanation is wanted.

Background

Mars is the ancient god of Roman war, guardian of the state, father of Rome, and avenger of every insult left unanswered. He does not revel in violence for its own sake. To Mars, war is a sacred instrument, sharpened by discipline and wielded for order, inheritance, and glory. A battle proves whether a people possess the courage to defend their homes, honor their dead, and impose their will upon an uncertain world. Cowardice is the one failure he cannot forgive, for the coward breaks faith with the soldier beside him, the ancestors behind him, and the homeland that depends upon his return. For ages, Mars has pursued a relentless campaign against Ares, whom he despises as a creature of frenzy masquerading as a god. Where Mars sees purpose, Ares sees only slaughter. Their rivalry has spread from the heavens into the mortal world. Temples have been ruined, statues cast down, and ancient names chiseled from stone as Mars works to erase his enemy from the memory of the West. He will not be satisfied until every warrior who seeks righteous battle calls upon Mars, and Ares survives only as a forgotten echo of undisciplined bloodshed. Mars now turns his ambition toward the return of Roman dominion. He believes the Semi Deus of the Roman Gods must reclaim the power once held in their name, and he intends to forge the heroes capable of making that restoration possible. Among them stands Perseus, the prophesied Imperator. Mars claims a blood connection through Perseus's mother, an ancestral tie that may be genuine, magnified by politics, or deliberately obscured by time. The truth matters less to Mars than the bond it creates. By placing Perseus within Rome's inheritance, he binds the future ruler to the empire he means to resurrect. He travels beside mortal companions not from affection alone, but because heroes are the instruments through which divine designs become history. They are weapons, witnesses, heirs, and perhaps the founders of a new empire. Yet Mars does not dismiss their humanity. He measures them by their courage under pressure, their loyalty when victory seems impossible, and their willingness to sacrifice for something greater than themselves. Those who prove worthy may earn his respect. Those who falter will learn that the god of war is also the judge of those who claim the right to wield it.
